Job Description

Days: 260 days per year. Reports to: Treasurer REQUIRED: 1. High School Diploma or GED Equivalent 2. Civil Service eligibility 3. Accounting training and two years accounting experience 4. Cooperate and get along with others 5. Knowledge of school and fund accounting procedures 6. Ability to solve problems without supervision 7. Experience with spreadsheet and data base software 8. Honesty 9. Perform well under pressure 10. Ability to accept change DESIRABLE: 1. Experience with Microsoft, Excel and Microsoft Word 2. Typing and word processing skills 3. Knowledge of Canton City School System 4. Time management and organizational skills GENERAL DUTIES: The responsibilities of an Accounting Specialist include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Works with bookkeepers, educators, and secretaries in solving accounting problems related to grants 2. Monitors expenditures for compliance with local procedures and state and federal regulations 3. Prepares the annual GAAP statements and the 4502 (annual state report) 4. Prepares and distributes financial statements 5. Prepares state and federal reports 6. Assists in the preparation of the annual budget 7. Reconciles bank statements 8. Processes receipts, purchase orders, investments, invoices and transfers 9. Maintains an adequate system of filing 10. Works as a member of a team 11. Performs other duties as directed

Testing Information

Subsequent to the filing of the application, the candidates will be notified of the location, date, and time of the examination. The written examination will cover the following subjects: Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Accounting Principles and Logic and other related subjects. A 70% passing point will be used. The use of battery powered, non-printing calculators during the examination will be permitted. You must bring your own calculator, but you can not use your cell phone/smart watch.

Important notice to veterans: As provided in ORC 124.23C, any person who has completed service in the uniformed services, who have been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is an Ohio resident and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than 180 days of active duty service pursuant to an executive order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress of the United States may file with the director a certificate of service or honorable discharge (DD-214 Long version), and upon this filing, the person shall receive an additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of the person's total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade. A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member's initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person's total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade. Notice of drug testing requirement: Pursuant to Civil Service Rules applicants are hereby advised that the position of employment being examined for is subject to a drug test. Accordingly, eligibility is not considered final until drug testing has been successfully completed with a negative result.
