We are seeking a Genetic Counselor to join our team on a Part-Time Basis. The Genetic Counselor independently provides genetic counseling and referral services for patients of all age groups who have or are at risk for genetic conditions or birth defects. This role serves as a consultant to health care providers regarding specialized genetic information and supports the development and administration of genetic services and programs for members.

Essential Responsibilities

• Provide genetic counseling services and obtain informed consent for genetic testing across pediatric, adult, cancer, and prenatal referrals.
• Assess recurrence risks and recommend appropriate medical or genetic testing based on analysis of risk, benefit, and cost.
• Provide case management for complex genetics cases, including coordination of medical recommendations, management plans, testing, and ongoing counseling.
• Respond to genetic questions and concerns from patients and health care providers; conduct chart reviews and obtain, document, and evaluate genetic and medical histories to support hereditary risk assessments.
• Provide post-test genetic counseling, communicate test results to patients and providers, coordinate genetic services, and provide appropriate resources and referrals, including community support groups.
• Participate in the development and implementation of standardized protocols and enhanced clinical practice standards for the identification, referral, counseling, and testing of patients and families requiring genetic services.
• Develop culturally sensitive and age-appropriate educational materials for patients and health professionals and participate in community education programs.
• Maintain current knowledge of advances in genetics and evaluate patient charts and family histories through review of outside records, examination of affected individuals, and family testing, including chromosome analysis, DNA studies, and metabolic screening.
• Provide initial crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling to members following the discovery of unexpected findings related to genetic conditions.
• Maintain statistics and monitor trends to support appropriate patient referral and care and to inform adjustments to protocols.
• Develop, implement, and coordinate genetic programs, including prenatal diagnosis, screening programs, carrier screening, and specialty clinics at the local or regional level.
• Develop and present in-service education to physicians and other health care providers regarding genetic services and current medical genetics topics.
• Partner with the Physician Program Director and Lab Services to support quality and cost-effectiveness in genetic testing.
• Participate in National Genomics programs and assist with integrating national genomics initiatives regionally.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or completion of the degree prior to employment start date.
• Board Certified or Active Candidate Status by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
• National Provider Identifier (NPI) or ability to obtain one prior to employment.
• Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, and regulatory requirements, including Medicare/CMS.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two years of experience in a genetic counselor position preferred.
• Oncology genetic counseling experience preferred.
• General genetics experience preferred.
• Perinatology genetic counseling experience preferred.

For individuals practicing under a temporary Genetic Counselor license, the position must be performed under the general supervision of a licensed genetic counselor or licensed physician. The temporary license expires after 24 months or 30 days after notification that the applicant has failed the ABGC certification examination, whichever occurs first, and cannot be renewed.
