The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $90,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Work Arrangements Flexibility to telecommute two days a week, with three days on-site at the main headquarters in Long Beach, California. This position will be located at the Chancellor's Office or Sacramento. Benefits Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision Benefits Generous vacation plan 15 paid holidays a year Tuition waiver education program (also applies to eligible family members) Membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) Job Summary The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an Associate Fire Plans Examiner to learn to conduct plan review and develop familiarity with permit processing procedures, permit intake functions, and related administrative workflows to ensure compliance with fire and life safety regulations and standards. The essential purpose of this class is to provide training in the various State Fire Marshal Programs and to develop knowledge and ability for advancement to the next higher class of Fire Plans Examiner. Key Responsibilities Become familiar with forms, logs, files and terminology used in all programs enforceable by OFS. Study organization of State Government and the legislative process of adopting statutes, and the preparation and adoption of regulations to implement the statutes. Study Titles 19 and 24 of the California Administrative Code, the International Building Code, the Health and Safety Code, and other related codes; study plan review procedures. Become familiar with office procedures and policies. Assist higher level staff in field inspections, plan review, or presentation of fire training courses. Accompany, observe, and assist higher level staff conducting inspections for compliance with the standards of the State Fire Marshal. Participate in Fire Prevention Officer meetings, assist local fire departments, carry out campus public awareness activities, and other training. Become familiar with permit processing procedures, including application intake, document routing, records management, status tracking, and coordination with campus stakeholders. Assist with administrative support functions related to plan review and permit issuance, including maintaining permit logs, tracking submittals, organizing files, and supporting communication regarding corrections and approvals. Develop working knowledge of permit technician functions and customer service practices associated with construction permit intake, completeness review, and coordination of project documentation. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in fire technology, or in a related field, or other relevant comparable experience in design/compliance/construction/fire safety field or equivalent combination of education and experience. One year of experience in any field leading to knowledge of fire suppression/prevention, public safety, law enforcement, regulatory compliance, public education/training, or building trades. Knowledge of: Modern English spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure to ensure that written materials are complete and concise. California Motor Vehicle Code to safely operate a state vehicle. Active listening techniques to complete training objectives and communicate with others. Health and safety hazards encountered during duties to mitigate personal safety risk. Personal protective equipment to enhance personal safety. Computer software to compile data for reporting and communication purposes. Time management techniques to efficiently organize workload and scheduling. Customer service techniques for tactful communications with the public and stakeholders. Basic math functions to make calculations. Methods to prioritize workload to meet customer and project requirements. Fire prevention inspection methods at the most basic level to understand and communicate to various levels of staff and the public. Fire protection principles at the most basic level to understand the concepts associated with the programs within the OFS. Study techniques to meet assigned training outcomes. Hierarchy of the department to receive direction from superiors and report up. Fire department response and suppression practices for plan review, inspections, accreditations, code development, and/or training standards. Laws, codes, and regulations for use as a training resource. Fire service terminology to communicate with supervisors, coworkers, and the public. The Incident Command System structure and task requirements to serve in a support function. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for use as a training resource. Basic permit processing procedures, including permit intake, document routing, file maintenance, and status tracking, to support plan review operations. Permit technician functions and customer service practices related to application submittals, project records, and communication with applicants and stakeholders. Electronic permitting, recordkeeping, or document management systems used to track plan review and permit activity. Preferred Qualifications Successful completion of two of the following courses in Fire Technology (equivalent to six semester units): Introduction to Fire Technology Fire Equipment and Systems Fundamentals of Fire Prevention Fire Investigation Fundamentals of Fire Protection Introduction to Law Enforcement Fundamentals of Fire Behavior Introduction to Criminal Control Investigation Application Period Priority consideration will be given to candidates who apply by May 15, 2026 .
