ER RN: Fast-Paced Life-Saving Patient Care

Job Summary The Registered Nurse (RN) functions primarily in direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice. The RN triages patients, obtains patient history and vital signs, and assesses patients. The RN acts independently to initiate immediate care in life‑threatening situations in the absence of a physician, provides care for both acutely ill and non‑acute patients, performs multiple procedures utilizing both complex and simple nursing skills, and assists the physician with their procedures. The RN provides physical and psychological comfort to patients, families, and visitors, offers discharge and follow‑up instructions, answers ambulance radios, and gives appropriate orders for pre‑medical center care. The RN works with sophisticated equipment and handles a variety of patient types in a frequently stressful environment, providing care in the Emergency Department, Medical, and Surgical Floors. For casual positions: casual employees have no regularly scheduled work hours but must agree to fulfill a minimum time commitment for as long as the position is held, including at least 48 hours per month with 24 of those hours on weekends, and an annual requirement of 24 hours worked on holidays. Responsibilities (25%) Perform nursing assessments, intervene appropriately and promptly, and participate in care planning. (25%) Regularly assess patient needs and provide skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician, following the authorized plan of care and accepted standards of practice. (20%) Process physician/provider orders accurately, completely, and timely; follow up on medication changes and order clarifications. (15%) Evaluate effectiveness of treatment plans and suggest or facilitate changes to improve patient care. (15%) Actively participate in updating/revising treatment plans in collaboration with other team members, using current information. Certifications and Licensures ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (equivalent experience: within 12 months of hire or transfer) BLS: Basic Life Support (equivalent experience: within 3 months of hire or transfer; qualification source: AHA) PALS: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS or ENPC required within one year of hire or transfer) RN: Registered Nurse (qualification source: MI) TNCC: Trauma Nurse Core Course or ATCN (equivalent experience: within 12 months of hire or transfer) Fingerprinting (essential) Team Advanced: Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (equivalent experience: within 6 months of hire or transfer; employees hired on or before 12/31/2023 have 24 months to complete) Required Education Associate’s Degree in Nursing (required) Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred) Other Duties and Responsibilities Use physical assessment techniques (auscultation, percussion, palpation, observation) to identify patients’ physical problems and care needs. Recognize self‑limitations and seek appropriate resources. Possess clinical competence in airway management, cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, blood gas analysis, venipuncture, and physical assessment. Reassess patient health status and identify significant changes. Individualize care plans. Coordinate prescribed plans with orders and the health‑care team. Communicate pertinent care aspects to patients, families, or other healthcare workers. Initiate home health referrals when appropriate. Set priorities and implement nursing measures that correlate with the identified plan and standard of care. Recognize changes in patient condition and take action to manage, reduce, or eliminate symptoms and promote comfort. Demonstrate respect for patient dignity and privacy. Document nursing interventions and patient responses. Maintain a safe patient environment and take actions to prevent risk situations. Provide patient/family education, explain procedures, and document instructions given to family. Have effective interpersonal skills with customers. Assist peers in patient‑care activities. Recognize stress in others and use positive coping techniques. Set goals and prioritize care according to acuity. Be accountable in following medical‑center policies, procedures, and attendance. Participate in continuing education, mid‑center computer‑based learning modules, in‑services, and skills day. Experience, Training and Skills Knowledge of nursing skills normally acquired through approximately 2 years in a medical‑center or similar setting. Weekend RN positions require a minimum of two years of experience. Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or appropriate substitutes. Ability to move freely about the facility, with or without an assistive device, and perform job functions as outlined. Visual and hearing requirements with or without assistive devices. Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods; may need to kneel, stoop, or crouch. Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other infectious materials; must follow blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing policies. Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and remain alert. Dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and repetitive motion. Physical Demand Level Medium. Ability to lift or carry between 21-50 lbs. occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) and 20 lbs. frequently (34‑66% of the workday); continuous 10 lbs. (67‑100% of the workday) and arm/leg control activities such as walking, standing, pushing, pulling. #J-18808-Ljbffr
