Departmental Overview UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) is a comprehensive college health service providing fully accredited primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty, and staff. UHS provides on-campus medical care and coordinates supplemental needs for off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. The Clinical Services Program within the UHS includes urgent care, primary care and specialty clinics, laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, and a major medical insurance plan. Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to enable students to get the most from their educational experience, minimizing the impact of illness, injury and emotional distress on their academic career. Medical care and wellness programs are available to faculty and staff to meet their occupational health needs and minimize lost work time. These visits generate ancillary encounters with the Radiology, Clinical Laboratory, Physical Therapy and Pharmacy departments. The Counseling and Psychological Services department sees an additional 15,000 visits per year. Position Summary Under the supervision of the Occupational Health Chief, nurse practitioners (NPs) provide health care to UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and student employees as occupational health patients, including assessing and treating a wide variety of conditions, ailments and injuries with emphasis on work-related injuries and illnesses. The NPs also see surveillance and screening exams. Involves providing healthcare services within broadened scope of nursing practice. This includes diagnosis of illness and injury, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, ordering/furnishing medications and devices, establishing plans of care that promote health care maintenance (wellness) and illness prevention. Collaborates with a physician for general medical supervision. Nurse Practitioners are an integral part of both healthcare and administrative teams within Occupational Health and support the mission of the UHS by optimizing the health of individuals and campus as a whole. Individuals in this position must reflect a balance and understanding of both patient care needs and efficient clinic operations. CLINICAL CARE
Injury Care Takes appropriate health history according to presenting complaint and physical findings including pertinent negatives for patients who present to the Occupational Health Clinic with complaints of injury or illness thought to be due to work. Conducts an appropriate physical exam corresponding to presenting complaint, and history. Formulates appropriate medical and nursing assessment of patient problems. Formulates appropriate disposition and/or treatment plan. Includes: ordering and interpreting diagnostic test(s), implementing therapeutic treatment modalities (including medications), and providing appropriate patient education. Integrates patient education and instruction in health maintenance and injury prevention where appropriate. Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and determines when to collaborate with the Occupational Health Physician. Provides appropriate referral to different specialty and/or sub specialty care for further evaluation and treatment. Determine work-relatedness and causation of injury or illness. Evaluates the workers' compensation case and develops plans for comprehensive care. Provides case management of individual patients, which includes communication with UCB department liaisons, UCB Disability Management Services and Sedgwick CMS. Provides feedback and/or follow-up to patients in a timely fashion. Determines the need for appropriate follow-up care and arranges for appropriate referrals of patients for further evaluation. Consults colleagues when appropriate and in a professional manner. Maintains appointment template that assures appropriate access for occupational health scheduled and walk-in patients; keep pace within appointment systems during the scheduled clinic time. Medical Surveillance And Employee Screenings/Exams Requires knowledge of OSHA and CalOSHA and other public health requirements and occupational health recommendations and requirements. Perform pre-placement, medical surveillance and other similar physical examinations, telehealth appointments, or on-line review of medical questionnaires. Administers vaccines, tuberculin skin tests, vision and other tests needed and in scope of practice. Screens injured workers for participation in the Occupational Wellness/WorkStrong Program. Assist with emerging campus and public health issues, i.e. pandemic response, as needed Assist with phone screening and ordering testing if indicated as part of campus public health policies. Return to work clearance. Per campus guidelines in accordance with local public health recommendations, return to work is required in specific public health instances. Documentation Of Practice, Maintains Professional Standards Of Documentation Records content of all patient encounters within the patient's electronic medical record utilizing standardized templates (or progress note using SOAP format) and workflows. Medical documentation is easily interpreted by all members of the health care team. Charts in a timely fashion. Charting reflects the process of care, patient progress and current patient status. All communications with patient should be recorded in the EMR. Updates current medications, allergies and significant medical history at each visit. Completes appropriate forms including, but not limited to, work-related injury, encounter, ancillary and any other forms relevant to the practice. Appropriate referrals and documentation on EMR include in visit orders, referrals, request for insurance authorization, etc. Programmatic Support And Adminstrative Responsibilities Maintains record systems used to track health screening programs (including online health screening programs for campus workers), assists with ATD exposure response. Works with Occupational Health Clinic Manager, Occupational Health Clinicians, Clinical/Medical Assistants, in tracking health screening and vaccinations. Review and/or develop patient education materials on occupational health topics Participates in the administration, including staff meetings, related to the Occupational Wellness Program (including WorkStrong). Organizational Responsibilities Demonstrates a positive, constructive attitude that facilitates the goals and mission of the University Health Service. Adheres to principles of quality, client-oriented standards. Demonstrates professionalism, courtesy, and sensitivity in all interactions with patients and staff regardless of cultural, racial/ethnic background or sexual orientation. Refers administrative inquires, patient complaints/concerns to appropriate supervisors. Knowledgeable of and adheres to all policies regarding patient rights and responsibilities, rules of confidentiality and patient privacy (HIPAA and FERPA). Maintains an understanding of the social and environmental context of occupational health on the college campus. Arrives at workstation in a timely manner. Submits time off leave requests in a timely manner. Reliable attendance maintained. Works collaboratively with Health Services staff following a team approach. Implements University and UHS policies and procedures Knowledgeable of UHS departments, services, and locations. Knowledgeable of and adheres to operational, administrative, business, and personnel policies. Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Education Graduate of a masters level nurse practitioner program in occupational health health nursing, preferred. Will consider an adult or family nurse practitioner with experience in occupational health. Computer Skills must support medical applications (for example, electronic medical records and retrieval, appointment scheduling programs, tracking and screening programs) Comfortable with telehealth and online surveillance programs. Knowledgeable in emergency policies and procedures. Knows emergency/disaster plan. Knows use and location of emergency equipment at a level appropriate to the assigned unit. Initiates basic CPR as needed. Schedules Adheres to hours of work and payroll responsibilities Demonstrates flexibility in work schedules Preferred Qualifications Experience: 2 years working as a nurse practitioner Experience in an occupational health clinic with injury care in the California Workers' Compensation system Experience conducting medical surveillance examinations. Experience and/or training in spirometry through a program approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Experience and/or certification in Occupational Hearing Conservationist Certified Occupational Health Nurse-S or similar certification DOT FMCSA Certified Medical Examiner Salary & Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California's Compensation & Benefits website. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $84.58 - $105.14 This is a 60%, part-time (24 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
