Job Description

This role supports a long-established custom plastic profile extrusion manufacturer that serves transportation, agriculture, energy, refrigeration, retail, commercial, and building industries. As a Maintenance Technician, you will perform a mix of mechanical and electrical maintenance with a strong focus on troubleshooting, repair, and safe operation of production equipment in a high-volume plastics extrusion environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform troubleshooting operations to diagnose the condition of facilities, equipment, and machinery and take appropriate action to complete repairs and adjustments.
• Set up and adjust production equipment to support efficient and reliable manufacturing operations.
• Conduct reactive maintenance on a wide variety of equipment, including extruders, saws, polars, conveyors, vacuums, loaders, pumps, gear boxes, and related systems.
• Perform safe and effective repairs to ensure operating equipment does not pose a risk of injury to employees or cause damage to machinery or facilities.
• Use a voltmeter to diagnose electrical issues and verify voltage, current, and resistance values during troubleshooting.
• Understand and work with AC and DC voltage systems, including troubleshooting and repairing 480V three-phase motors and related equipment.
• Change motors and read wiring diagrams to ensure correct installation and operation of electrical components.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain gearboxes, bearings, seals, mechanical drives, and power transmission components.
• Maintain and repair water pumps and gear pumps, including seals and priming operations, to ensure proper fluid movement and system performance.
• Align motor couplings, sprockets, and pulleys to reduce wear, prevent failures, and support efficient mechanical operation.
• Install, change, and adjust drive chains using chain breaks and various chain links, ensuring proper tension and alignment.
• Test fuses and replace components as needed to restore safe and reliable equipment operation.
• Read and interpret electrical and mechanical prints and blueprints to guide troubleshooting, repairs, and installations.
• Perform basic pipefitting tasks, including gluing PVC, sweating copper, and working on drain lines to support facility systems.
• Understand and support the operation of heat exchangers as part of the overall process equipment.
• Operate within electrical control panels to perform rewiring, troubleshooting, and work on disconnects, relays, limit switches, and related control devices.
• Read and interpret ladder logic and meters to diagnose control issues and support PLC troubleshooting.
• Differentiate between incremental and absolute encoders and apply this knowledge when troubleshooting and repairing automation systems.
• Document work accurately by entering hours into the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) daily and signing out inventory to work orders.
• Participate in a hands-on electrical test involving an electrical panel with multiple components, working through relays, limit switches, and related devices as part of the hiring process.
• Answer technical troubleshooting questions related to VFD-controlled motors, three-phase systems, encoders, and DC contact measurements as part of the qualification process.
• Support a majority of reactive maintenance tasks while also performing testing, inspection, and repair functions as needed to maintain production uptime.

Essential Skills

• Industrial maintenance experience with both mechanical and electrical systems in a manufacturing environment.
• Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, including the ability to diagnose and repair issues in 480V three-phase motor systems.
• Comfort and proficiency in troubleshooting variable frequency drives (VFDs), including motors controlled by VFDs.
• Proficiency in using a voltmeter and reading voltage, current, and resistance accurately.
• Ability to operate safely and effectively within control panels, including rewiring, troubleshooting, and working with disconnects, relays, and limit switches.
• Ability to read and interpret ladder logic and electrical meters for troubleshooting control circuits.
• Understanding of the difference between incremental and absolute encoders and how they function in control systems.
• Experience with relay logic and PLC troubleshooting in an industrial setting.
• Mechanical aptitude with experience working on extruders, saws, conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, and related equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical prints and blueprints.
• Knowledge of gearboxes, bearings, seals, mechanical drives, and power transmission systems.
• Ability to align motor couplings, sprockets, and pulleys accurately.
• Experience changing and adjusting drive chains using chain breaks and various chain links.
• Knowledge of water pumps and gear pumps, including seals and priming operations.
• Basic pipefitting skills, including gluing PVC, sweating copper, and working on drain lines.
• Ability to test fuses and perform basic electrical diagnostics safely.
• Comfort working with AC and DC voltage, including understanding expected voltage readings in three-phase systems.
• Proficiency in using a CMMS to enter hours and track inventory against work orders.
• Ability to perform welding and general electrical maintenance tasks in a plastics manufacturing environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in plastics manufacturing or plastics extrusion environments.
• Familiarity with heat exchanger operation within industrial processes.
• Experience working with hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Comfort participating in a hands-on electrical panel test involving relays, limit switches, and related components during the hiring process.
• Ability to clearly explain troubleshooting steps, such as diagnosing indicator lights or control issues, in a structured and logical manner.
• Willingness to work 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 schedule on either first shift (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) or third shift (6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.), with an electrician focus.
• Strong attention to safety and adherence to established procedures when working on energized and non-energized equipment.
• Comfort answering technical qualification questions related to VFD troubleshooting, three-phase voltage readings, encoder types, and DC contact measurements.

Work Environment

The role is based in a moderately clean plastic extrusion manufacturing facility. You will work around extruders, saws, conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, and related equipment in a production environment that combines both mechanical and electrical systems. The position follows a 12-hour, 2-2-3 shift schedule, with available shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., and includes off-shift work eligible for a shift differential. You will regularly use tools such as voltmeters, meters for ladder logic diagnostics, and standard mechanical and electrical hand tools while working in and around control panels, production lines, and support systems.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $62000.00 - $79040.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
