Job Summary Reporting to the Social Work Manager, the Social Worker LSW evaluates, diagnoses, and treats a wide range of psychosocial problems using individual clinical social work skills to assist patients and their families in resolving personal and environmental problems caused by mental or physical illness. The Social Worker assigned to the inpatient units participates in a co‑management model with unit leadership to support patient flow. Responsibilities Consistently applies corporate values of respect, honesty, and fairness to improve health status of the region’s patients. Acts in accordance with Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct. Completes bio‑psychosocial evaluations to eliminate barriers to treatment and enhance patient health status. Provides consultation on patients’ background, psychosocial functioning, and needs to medical and support staff, facilitating comprehensive care planning. Develops treatment plans and initiates clinical interventions using individual and group modalities, analyzing treatment outcomes to maximize health status and decision‑making. Documents social work activity in patients’ medical records per departmental standards. Participates in collaborative care rounds with other care personnel and community agencies to improve coordination and safely transition patients to communities and less restrictive settings. Provides education to patients and families to enhance understanding, acceptance, and adherence to medical and social work recommendations. Assesses patient and family advocacy needs, coordinates appropriate advocacy activities within the hospital and community, emphasizing self‑determination and improved social supports. Supervises and evaluates BSW/MSW degree candidates in the Department of Clinical Social Work Student program (requires credentialing as LICSW or appropriate experience). Completes case related statistics and reports per departmental standards. Participates in hospital‑wide, departmental, and community studies, projects, and trainings to educate on psychosocial issues and identify service delivery barriers. Remains current on community resources, accessing them as needed. Maintains and enhances professional expertise through appropriate educational activities and training for specific clinical responsibilities. Participates in quality assurance activities in accordance with department, hospital, and The Joint Commission standards. Adheres to Brown University Health, hospital, and department policies to maintain a safe care environment and comply with all laws and regulations. Minimum Qualifications Master’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited graduate school and a current license from the State of RI, Board of Social Work Licensure. Minimum requirement for licensure is Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW); if eligible, must obtain Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW). Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns. Between six months and one year of clinical experience, preferably in a health or mental health setting with emphasis on populations served. Training and experience necessary to address specific patient needs, including age‐stage and cultural considerations. Analytical and therapeutic skills for evaluating patients, developing treatment plans, initiating therapy, and evaluating outcomes. Effective interaction skills with patients, families, medical staff, and outside agencies. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Works in a normal office environment with exposure to patient care. Supervisory Responsibility Provides functional guidance to Social Work Interns, recommending pursuit of LICSW level licensure.
