Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $28.07 to $38.17/hr.

Department Marketing Statement:

The Office of Admissions is charged with assisting the campus in reaching its undergraduate admission and enrollment objectives in accordance with the University mission and campus enrollment goals. Department efforts are focused upon increasing the academic quality and diversity of the entering class while maintaining the required enrollment level. Admissions seeks to implement the campus admission goals by providing a number of services and events. Admissions promotes postsecondary education; encourages applications from historically underserved populations and schools; provides admission information to high school and community college counselors, teachers and administrators; provides admission advice to prospective freshman and transfer students; reviews and evaluates applications; develops recruitment strategies and events for admitted students; reviews coursework for transfer credit; and creates a presence on campus that is consistent with UCSB's mission and high academic standards. These services are provided by three units within the department: Visitor Center, Outreach Services, and Application Services.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:
The Admission Counselor for Diversity Initiative will implement a series of programs that generate interest, application, and ultimately UCSB enrollment of high school and community college students with special focus on African American communities. Engage in collaborative efforts with university and alumni networks to deliver services to students, parents, school counselors, and community agencies working with college-bound African American students. Conduct visits to high schools and community colleges in order to inform prospective UCSB students, their parents, counselors and educators about admission policies and practices, and encourage enrollment at UCSB. Initiate outreach programs and provide pre-enrollment advising to prospective applicants and newly admitted students and their parents. Incumbent should process a thorough knowledge of University application procedures and admission policies and practices. The position requires strong counseling skills, exceptional public speaking skills, and solid time management and organizational skills.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent experience

Knowledge and experience working with a diverse population

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Preferred Qualifications:

Working knowledge of UC and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to prospective applicants and the public.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Satisfactory criminal history background check

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, extensive travel September-November and March-April

  • Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
  • 20% High School and Community College Outreach - The incumbent conducts outreach to high schools and community colleges in order to inform prospective UCSB students, their parents, counselors and educators about admission policies and practices, and to encourage students -- particularly underrepresented student populations -- to apply and enroll in UCSB. School visits occur primarily in the fall with periodic travel throughout the year. Specifically, the incumbent will: Initiate a series of high school and community college visits in order to disseminate and articulate admissions policies of the UCSB campus and the UC system. Meet with parents and prospective students seeking information about the campus. Make oral and multi-media presentations pertinent to the needs and interests of the audience. Maintain thorough knowledge and be able to disseminate information covering all aspects of the campus including admission eligibility requirements, academic programs, curricula, EOP, housing, financial aid, orientation, etc. Represent UCSB at appropriate professional conferences. Make on-campus presentations to visiting student groups. Provide pre-admission counseling to campus visitors and students in campus programs (EAO, MESA, SIOP). Lead College Advising Presentations (CAPs) at school sites, attend College Nights and College Fairs, and represent UCSB at California College and University Days (CCUDs). Evaluate the academic records of targeted students in order to counsel and advise them with regard to achieving and maintaining UC eligibility. Serves as a member of the Admissions Selection team. Reviews application files and provides input to selection team on African American applicants.
  • 20% Special Event Planning - Committee Member - Assist in the coordination of special events, both on campus and throughout California, that address the specific informational needs of the scholar applicant. Develop new initiatives and assist with the coordination of existing special events including the Chancellor's Regional Receptions and Spring Insight Open House. Liaison with relevant departments, staff and faculty to ensure appropriate campus representation at these events Incorporate UCSB staff, faculty, and students into the program itinerary. Initiates contact with high-achieving admitted students in order to encourage their participation in the Chancellor's Regional Receptions. Host receptions, co-sponsored by student organizations and Admissions, to better acquaint prospective families to the UCSB community.
  • 20% Applicant Advocacy - Counsel and advise newly admitted students and their parents with regard to admission, enrollment, housing, financial aid, course selection and other concerns. Serve as a liaison between admitted students and EOP, Financial Aid, Admissions, Orientation, Housing, and student organizations to ensure all special needs and questions the student has are addressed in a timely manner.
  • 20% Special Diversity Initiatives - LA2SB: In partnership with Visitor Center staff, coordinate the LA2SB Program. Identify and host targeted schools for day-visits to campus to include activities such as admissions presentations, campus tours, and student panels. Advocacy interns: Coordinate with the Assistant Directors within School Services to develop a team of Advocacy Interns who will serve as peer counselors to prospective students. Advocacy Interns will assist professional staff with Advocacy and Outreach duties. Counselor Services: Broaden and strengthen our liaisons with school counselors at key high schools and community organizations. Activities include hosted counselor visits, Data sharing with key schools, and counselor in-service presentations to ensure familiarity with UC admission policies and UCSB selection criteria. Training ? Serve on the Admissions training committee and provide input for professional development activities that will enhance the cultural competency of all staff. Provide input and recommend enhancements to outreach initiatives that will strengthen UCSB's relationship to African American communities.
  • 10% Campus Collaborations - Collaborate with SIOP to enhance effectiveness of student-sponsored outreach programs. Ensure student data is shared across programs to allow for improved student follow-up. Create follow-up communications with participants and counselors from participating schools Collaborate with student organizations to create an "Adopt a School" program whereby registered student organizations would serve as official student liaisons between targeted high schools and UCSB. Collaborate with the Alumni Association, build upon established African American alumni networks to encourage greater alumni participation at Chancellor's Regional Receptions, create Alumni phone calling campaigns, and other alumni initiatives to attract prospective students to UCSB, expand the role of Admissions and prospective students in Black Family Weekend activities In partnership with EOP, the Multicultural Center, and the African diasporic Cultural Resource Center (AdCRC), develop greater cultural competence and historical knowledge of campus
  • 5% Communications - Collaborate with Communications Manager to ensure all print, web, and electronic communications highlight UCSB's African American community.
  • 5% Program Analysis - Partner with Institutional Research and Public Affairs to lead focus groups with the UCSB Black community
