Codes Inspector

Job Summary Under the direction of the Building Official, the Codes Inspector performs technical inspection and enforcement work to ensure compliance with adopted building codes, zoning regulations, property maintenance standards, and other applicable City ordinances. Essential Functions & Job Responsibilities Permit and Plan Review Assist with intake, issuance, and review of building, sign, and related permit applications. Review construction documents for general compliance with adopted codes and local regulations. Inspections and Code Compliance Conduct field inspections and re‑inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and sites. Inspect existing structures for hazardous conditions, structural concerns, and property maintenance violations. Issue correction notices, inspection reports, and stop‑work orders when work is not in compliance. Customer Service and Coordination Meet with contractors, architects, developers, property owners, and the general public to explain code requirements and inspection procedures. Respond to calls, e‑mails, and questions regarding permits, inspections, and code requirements. Coordinate with other City departments as needed. Documentation and Administration Maintain accurate inspection records in the City’s permitting software. Prepare letters, notices, reports, and other written correspondence. Attend training and maintain required certifications. Perform related duties and special assignments as instructed by the Codes Director or Zoning Administrator. In the event of a natural disaster where the City Manager has activated the emergency operations center, the employee will be required to support the response activities as directed by the department head and City Manager. Qualifications Knowledge / Education: Must have good verbal and written communication skills; must be able to perform multiple tasks; excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Knowledge of construction principles and practices relating to the adopted building and zoning codes of the City of Goodlettsville. Building construction methods, materials, and terminology. Adopted building, plumbing, mechanical, fire, zoning, and property maintenance codes. Inspection procedures and documentation practices. Customer service and conflict resolution principles. Basic computer software, permitting systems, and recordkeeping practices. Ability to: Work independently and/or with a group; excellent mathematical aptitude; attention to detail; exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions; establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. Read and interpret construction plans, site plans, codes, ordinances, and technical documents. Conduct thorough inspections and clearly document findings. Communicate effectively with contractors, property owners, design professionals, staff, and the public. Exercise sound judgment and maintain professionalism in difficult situations. Manage multiple inspections, deadlines, and follow‑up items. Prepare clear written correspondence without routine administrative assistance. This position is considered safety sensitive and is subject to the City’s drug and alcohol random testing policy. Special Requirements Training & Experience: Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Valid Tennessee driver’s license required. Two years of experience in construction, building inspection, code enforcement, permitting, customer service, or a related field preferred. Building codes certification from the State of Tennessee is preferred. Required Certifications Must obtain certification from the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office as a Residential Building Inspector, Residential Plumbing Inspector and Residential Mechanical Inspector within one (1) year of hire. Must obtain certification from the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office as a Commercial Building Inspector, Commercial Plumbing Inspector, Commercial Mechanical Inspector, and Fire Inspector within two (2) years of hire. #J-18808-Ljbffr Goodlettsville
