Position Overview

A growing manufacturing organization in the Frederick, Maryland area is seeking a Quality Engineer to help strengthen quality systems, improve manufacturing processes, and drive a more proactive approach to quality.

This individual will work cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Operations to reduce defects, improve process performance, strengthen supplier quality, and ensure products consistently meet engineering, customer, and quality requirements. The role will have significant visibility on the manufacturing floor and will use data-driven problem solving, Lean methodologies, and ISO-based quality systems to drive measurable improvements.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain quality procedures, inspection plans, Control Plans, PFMEAs, and related documentation.
• Establish and monitor First Pass Yield (FPY) and other manufacturing quality metrics.
• Implement and maintain Layered Process Audits (LPA).
• Support ISO 9001 / ISO 9000-series compliance, internal audits, corrective actions, and ongoing QMS improvements.
• Perform Gage R&R and Measurement System Analysis (MSA) to ensure measurement processes are reliable and capable.
• Lead root-cause investigations and corrective actions for manufacturing, customer, and warranty-related quality issues.
• Utilize structured problem-solving methodologies including 5 Why, Fishbone, Pareto, 8D, PDCA, and DMAIC.
• Analyze scrap, rework, repair, FPY, defect, and warranty data to identify recurring problems and drive permanent corrective actions.
• Work closely with Production and Engineering to improve process capability, reduce variation, and prevent defects.
• Participate in Gemba walks and support Lean/Operational Excellence initiatives including Kaizen, VSM, standardized work, and line balancing.
• Support validation of new processes, equipment, tooling, and fixtures.
• Participate in New Product Introduction (NPI) and production ramp-up activities.
• Manage supplier quality concerns and corrective actions, including CAPA and 8D.
• Establish and manage PPAP requirements for new products and significant engineering or process changes.
• Monitor supplier performance and work with Supply Chain to address recurring supplier quality issues.
• Support investigations into customer complaints, warranty claims, and field failures.
• Partner across Engineering, Manufacturing, Service, and Supply Chain to implement sustainable corrective actions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 3–5 years of quality and/or manufacturing experience preferred.
• Hands-on manufacturing experience with strong knowledge of root-cause analysis and corrective action.
• Experience with ISO 9001 / ISO 9000-series quality systems.
• Experience with CAPA, 8D, Layered Process Audits, and structured problem solving.
• Knowledge of Gage R&R / MSA.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and BOMs.
• Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and quality-data analysis.

Preferred Experience

• Background in commercial HVAC, sheet metal, electrical, mechanical, or engineered-to-order manufacturing.
• Experience with PPAP and NPI.
• Lean/Six Sigma experience or certification.
• ASQ CQE or similar quality certification.
• Knowledge of PFMEA, Control Plans, SPC, and MSA.
• Experience working with ERP/MRP and quality management systems.
