Pharmacy Technician / Fulfillment Technician

This role combines pharmacy technician and fulfillment technician responsibilities to support safe, accurate, and timely medication dispensing for patients. You will work closely with pharmacists to enter, process, and manage prescription orders, maintain patient and pharmacy records, and assist with picking, labeling, packing, and shipping medications. The position requires strong attention to detail, comfort in a high-volume, call-heavy environment, and the ability to collaborate across a unified pharmacy and fulfillment team. This is an onsite role with a flexible schedule between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., offering opportunities for cross-training, ongoing extensions, and potential conversion to a permanent position.

Responsibilities

• Support pharmacists in the practice of pharmacy in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, HIPAA guidelines, and internal policies and procedures.
• Accurately interpret healthcare providers' prescription orders and enter them into the core pharmacy system.
• Notify prescribers of incomplete or incorrect prescription information and perform appropriate outreach within the legal limits of pharmacy technician authority.
• Assist pharmacists in obtaining accurate verbal orders for product replacement and missing prescription information from healthcare providers.
• Manage patient adherence processes, including scheduling medication deliveries in accordance with internal pharmacy guidelines when needed.
• Assist patients with treatment compliance by entering and updating current medications, allergies, and medical conditions, and triage calls to nursing staff or pharmacists when necessary.
• Use internal systems and web-based tools to communicate with health insurance payors and providers to investigate benefits and transmit test claims to verify prescription coverage, when applicable.
• Identify and recommend process and system improvements that increase efficiency and productivity in pharmacy operations, and communicate ideas to supervisors and team leads.
• Interact professionally and efficiently with internal and external teams, including other healthcare professionals, to ensure accurate and timely provision of services to patients.
• Collaborate with leads and other team members to support changing business priorities by executing or overseeing specific tasks related to patients, products, or services.
• Handle inbound and outbound calls, including high-volume call-center style work, and manage case updates, prescription questions, and other patient or provider inquiries.
• Prioritize work effectively, organize tasks, and perform testing or other activities as required by the business.
• Maintain current Illinois Certified Pharmacy Technician licensure and continuing education requirements as necessary.
• Assist pharmacists in the fulfillment of prescription orders by picking, labeling, packing, and shipping medications accurately and efficiently.
• Collaborate with inventory planning personnel to manage medication and commodity inventory, ensuring adequate stock levels for pick, pack, and ship activities.
• Assist in restocking commodities and supplies used during fulfillment operations.
• Meet performance standards in alignment with predefined metrics and key performance indicators for both pharmacy and fulfillment activities.
• Develop and maintain a deep understanding of all aspects of the fulfillment technician role and serve as a resource for pharmacy technicians and fulfillment team leads.
• Promote a positive, collaborative culture by demonstrating initiative, volunteering for additional tasks when appropriate, and supporting team goals.
• Maintain current licensure and continuing education requirements related to pharmacy technician practice.
• Support cross-functional workflows by flexing between pharmacy technician and fulfillment technician duties as business needs require.
• Demonstrate strong professionalism during all patient, provider, and team interactions, including adherence to call handling expectations and efficient after-call work.
• Contribute to a supportive, team-oriented environment where colleagues assist each other and share knowledge.
• Adapt to new tasks, processes, and systems as the organization evolves, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Skills

• Active Certified Pharmacy Technician license in the state of Illinois, with current compliance with licensure and continuing education requirements.
• Illinois pharmacy technician license with certification, in alignment with Illinois law and organizational expectations.
• A minimum of 3–5 years of experience within a specialty pharmacy, retail pharmacy, mail order pharmacy, pharmacy benefit manager (PBM), or healthcare provider setting.
• Experience with prescription data entry, medical record handling and documentation, and high-quality customer service in a pharmacy or healthcare environment.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to make high-quality decisions while operating under general supervision.
• Ability to work comfortably in a high-volume, customer service and call-center environment, including handling approximately 30–40 calls per day.
• Capability to manage average call handle times of 8–9 minutes with 3–5 minutes of after-call work and efficient wrap-up between calls.
• Strong core insurance knowledge, including medical and pharmacy benefits, and familiarity with online verification systems or similar tools.
• Proficiency using internal pharmacy systems and web-based tools to investigate benefits and transmit test claims.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with healthcare providers, patients, and internal teams in both verbal and written formats.
• Strong computer skills, including accurate data entry and familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize work, and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
• Comfort working in a call-heavy environment that is different from traditional retail pharmacy practice.
• Willingness and ability to commute onsite and work a flexible schedule between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
• Professionalism during interviews and in day-to-day work, including appropriate demeanor, communication, and reliability.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in specialty pharmacy, retail pharmacy, mail order pharmacy, PBM, or healthcare provider settings beyond the minimum required is beneficial.
• Prior call center or contact center experience, particularly in healthcare or pharmacy, is highly valued.
• Experience with order entry, order processing, and retail pharmacy workflows.
• Familiarity with high-volume prescription processing environments and adherence programs.
• Ability to adapt quickly to changing business priorities and cross-functional workflows.
• Demonstrated willingness to learn new tasks, cross-train across pharmacy and fulfillment functions, and take on additional responsibilities.
• Strong collaborative and cross-functional acumen, with a track record of working effectively within team-based environments.
• Ability to identify and communicate process and system improvement opportunities to leadership.
• Comfort working with predefined metrics and KPIs, and meeting or exceeding performance standards.
• Clear understanding of the call-center nature of the role, even if prior call-center experience is limited.
• Interest in long-term opportunities, including contract extensions and potential conversion to a permanent role.
• Motivation to contribute to a supportive, collaborative culture and to go above and beyond in daily responsibilities.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of North Chicago, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.05 - $27.00/hr.
