Brown and Caldwell (BC) is seeking a dedicated Health and Safety (H&S) Professional to join our West Business Unit (WBU) H&S team. In this role, you will report directly to the WBU Director of Health and Safety and work closely with both the Director and team members. A critical requirement for this position is demonstrated construction management experience, as you will be responsible for supporting field teams, overseeing contractor activities, and ensuring safe execution of construction-related work. Your primary responsibilities will include delivering outstanding internal client support and effectively managing subcontractor relationships. Remote work within the United States is allowed; candidate must be located in the Mountain or Pacific time zones. Detailed Description The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the Director of Health and Safety in managing and enhancing the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) program for the West Business Unit (WBU). This includes overseeing the safety performance of subcontractor partners and ensuring all activities comply with BC’s H&S standards as well as applicable regulatory requirements. Responsibilities Project Leadership: Work closely with the WBU Director, Health and Safety, and project staff to identify EHS risks, recommend improvements, and implement solutions. Serve as the H&S lead on low‑risk, programmatic projects. Subcontractor Oversight: Monitor and evaluate subcontractor safety practices to ensure alignment with project and company standards. Conduct H&S pre‑qualification of subcontractors using internal and external management systems. Client Support: Assist client service teams in understanding and meeting client‑specific H&S expectations. Maintain BC contractor pre‑qualification status in vendor systems such as Avetta, ISNetworld, and BROWZ for assigned clients. Program Facilitation: Support development and review of H&S plans for medium to high‑risk projects. Conduct in‑field project kick‑offs, audits, and provide on‑site H&S management as needed. Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitate meetings with WBU Leadership Team members and participate in Communities of Practice (CoPs) and workgroups. Performance Tracking: Assist the Director of Health and Safety with tracking performance indicators and preparing related reports to measure program effectiveness. Program Development: Contribute to the creation and implementation of new H&S initiatives, safety minutes, and presentations. Training & Awareness: Conduct refresher H&S training sessions such as HAZWOPER and Field Work Safety Awareness (FWSA), virtually and on site. Resource Promotion: Promote existing resources and tools, such as the EHS management system, to enhance engagement with H&S practices. Incident Response: Collaborate with the Director of Health and Safety to investigate complex or high‑risk incidents, near misses, or other safety concerns and recommend corrective actions. Office Support: Provide guidance to WBU office Health and Safety Coordinators and Health and Safety Specialists, including support for office Emergency Action Plans (OEAPs). Audit Activities: Conduct comprehensive field, desktop, and office audits for WBU projects and office locations. Cross‑Unit Collaboration: Work with Directors of Health and Safety from the East Business Unit and Private Sector Business Unit, and specialized Safety Partners to advance internal initiatives. Knowledge Sharing: Lead or participate in H&S Roadshows to share best practices and promote a culture of safety. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Health and Safety (Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, etc.). 2–5 years of related construction safety management experience. Foundational knowledge of health and safety principles. Willing/able to obtain a GSP, ASP, OHST, CHST or other professional certification. 30‑hour OSHA construction safety training. Advanced skills in MS Office products including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook; proficiency with Internet applications. Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Must be willing and able to work in the field year‑round, potentially for extended periods of time, and able to perform physically demanding work (short periods in extreme temperatures, wear safety equipment, stand, walk, lift 30 lbs, remain alert around equipment, climb stairs or ladders up to 24 feet). Must be willing and able to travel up to 20–30% of the time. Physical and Travel Requirements: Ability to work for short periods in extreme temperatures including heat and cold. Ability to wear required safety equipment at sites including hard hats, steel‑toed boots (or other approved toe protection), safety glasses, etc. Ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting field conditions or critical construction operations.
