Position Overview

Gulf Coast Transit District (GCTD) is seeking a skilled and dependable Diesel Mechanic to join our maintenance team. This position plays an essential role in keeping our transit fleet safe, reliable, and ready to serve the community.

The Diesel Mechanic performs skilled preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of mechanical and electrical systems on GCTD buses, vehicles, and equipment. The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver who takes pride in quality workmanship, safety, and keeping vehicles operating at their best.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Fleet Maintenance & Repair

• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repairs, adjustments, and overhauls on GCTD vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose and repair gas- and diesel-powered vehicles, including cars, trucks, vans, buses, and related equipment.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain engines, transmissions, differentials, axles, steering systems, driveshafts, suspension systems, cooling systems, ignition systems, bearings, and related components.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and air-brake systems.
• Perform electrical repairs and installations on vehicles and equipment.
• Perform welding using acetylene and arc-welding methods when required.
• Road-test vehicles after repairs to verify safe and proper operation.
• Respond to emergency roadside service calls involving disabled GCTD vehicles.
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests from supervisors, operators, and other departments.

Preventive Maintenance & Safety

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to maximize fleet reliability and minimize service interruptions.
• Maintain vehicles and equipment in accordance with GCTD requirements and applicable DOT, FMCSA, Texas Department of Transportation, OSHA, and local regulations.
• Follow established safety procedures and promote a safe, professional work environment.
• Remain current on applicable vehicle maintenance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, mileage, lubrication, service, and repair records.
• Respond promptly to audits and requests for maintenance documentation.

Parts, Equipment & Shop Operations

• Maintain an organized inventory of parts, tools, and supplies needed for vehicle repairs.
• Research vendors and compare pricing and quality to obtain cost-effective parts and supplies.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized maintenance shop and work area.
• Operate vehicle and equipment cleaning systems, including steam-cleaning equipment, as needed.
• Repair or install seat covers, accessories, and other vehicle components when necessary.
• Assist with maintenance and repair of shop facilities and equipment.

Teamwork & Customer Service

• Work collaboratively with mechanics, operators, supervisors, managers, and other GCTD departments.
• Provide professional, courteous, responsive, and timely assistance to coworkers, vendors, customers, and members of the public.
• Communicate maintenance concerns and repair recommendations clearly to supervisors.
• Work independently and exercise sound judgment when supervision is not immediately available.
• Assist with special projects and other assignments as directed.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• Hands-on experience as a maintenance technician, diesel mechanic, automotive mechanic, fleet technician, or similar position.
• Experience working with cars, trucks, vans, buses, or heavy equipment.
• Experience with gas and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and/or air-brake systems.
• Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and vehicle maintenance systems.
• Strong diagnostic, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively to urgent maintenance needs.
• Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing.
• Working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office, email, internet browsers, and maintenance-related systems.
• Knowledge of safe work practices, vehicle maintenance procedures, OSHA requirements, and proper handling/disposal of hazardous automotive materials.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or GED required; extensive directly related experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
• Previous experience in automotive, diesel, fleet, commercial, industrial, or heavy-equipment maintenance is preferred.

REQUIRED LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

• Valid Texas driver's license.
• Current DOT Medical Card.
• Active and valid vehicle liability insurance.
• No more than three moving or safety violations within the previous three years.
• Ability to obtain and maintain all required GCTD training and certifications.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & SCHEDULE

This position is hands-on and may involve working both inside and outside in a variety of conditions.

Work schedules are based on operational needs and may include:

• Early mornings or evenings
• Weekends and holidays
• Irregular or split shifts
• Overtime
• Emergency or roadside service

The position may involve exposure to vehicle and equipment noise, heat, cold, humidity, dust, fumes, gases, chemicals, water, and other environmental conditions commonly associated with fleet maintenance.

Occasional travel may be required for training or other GCTD business needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The position requires the ability to:

• Lift, move, push, or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Bend, twist, kneel, stoop, squat, and reach as necessary to perform maintenance duties.
• Climb and descend stairs.
• Stand or remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
• Safely operate vehicles and maintenance equipment.
• Hear with or without reasonable assistance.
• Maintain sufficient visual acuity to operate a motor vehicle and identify objects and vehicle conditions.
• Perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
