Job Description

Control Panel Electrician

Job Description

This role focuses on building, wiring, and assembling industrial control panels and machine wiring from electrical schematics and layout drawings. The electrician installs and wires components inside control cabinets, performs temporary interconnect wiring for testing, and supports maintenance and troubleshooting of plant equipment as needed. The position occasionally requires rare out-of-town travel and some overtime, and it offers the opportunity to work on a wide range of control systems and high-voltage equipment in a hands-on, shop-based environment.

Responsibilities

  • Build and assemble industrial control panels using provided electrical schematics and layout drawings, without relying on wire lists.
  • Lay out and mount components inside control cabinets, including inverter drives, PLCs, circuit breakers, transformers, relays, contactors, terminals, and other control devices.
  • Wire control cabinets ranging from common 30-inch enclosures to larger multi-bay, free-standing interconnecting enclosures.
  • Perform point-to-point wiring of internal components such as terminal blocks, relays, PLCs, motor starters, and variable frequency drives (VFDs) according to electrical schematics.
  • Install sensors and complete machine wiring to integrate control panels with field devices and equipment.
  • Complete temporary interconnect wiring for testing procedures under supervision once panel building, sensor installation, and machine wiring are finished.
  • Assist with various maintenance and troubleshooting tasks for plant equipment, including electrical and control-related issues.
  • Use hand tools, crimpers, wire cutters, wire strippers, and basic electrical testing equipment such as multimeters, megohmmeters, and loop calibrators to perform daily tasks.
  • Drill, tap, and use knockout punches to mount components inside control panels and on enclosures.
  • Support testing of electric motors and understand motor connections for verification and commissioning.
  • Work with EMT, flexible, and rigid conduit for routing and protecting wiring, with training provided as needed.
  • Follow and learn lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures when performing testing or maintenance to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and basic layout drawings to plan and execute wiring and assembly work accurately.
  • Collaborate with team members in a small shop environment to complete projects on schedule and support overall production needs.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned, including overtime and very occasional out-of-town or overnight travel when required.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of previous industrial control panel and machine wiring experience desired.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and basic layout drawings for control panels and machinery.
  • Proficiency in control panel wiring, electrical assembly, and high-voltage wiring practices.
  • Ability to learn and perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures for testing and maintenance activities.
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools, including hand crimpers, wire cutters, wire strippers, and basic electrical testing equipment such as multimeters, megohmmeters, and loop calibrators.
  • Capability to use drills, taps, and knockout punches for mounting components inside control panels.
  • Ability to perform accurate point-to-point wiring of internal components, including terminal blocks, relays, PLCs, motor starters, and VFD drives using electrical schematics.
  • Familiarity with electric motor connections for testing and troubleshooting.
  • Basic knowledge of EMT, flexible, and rigid conduit, with willingness to learn more as needed.
  • Experience with control systems, PLC controls, and PLC troubleshooting in an industrial environment.
  • Strong blueprint and wiring schematic reading skills for electrical and control panel work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Various size standard wrenches and Allen wrenches in both standard and metric sizes.
  • Various size crescent wrenches for general mechanical and electrical tasks.
  • Ratchet and socket set suitable for panel and equipment assembly work.
  • Wire strippers for 22–10 AWG conductors.
  • Utility knife for general cutting and stripping tasks.
  • Needle-nose and standard pliers for gripping, bending, and manipulating wires and components.
  • Side cutters and snips for cutting wire and trimming materials.
  • Multimeter for basic electrical measurements and troubleshooting.
  • Half-round and flat files for deburring and finishing cut edges.
  • Hacksaw with blades provided for cutting conduit or other materials.
  • High-speed 3/8-inch drill, with bits and taps provided for drilling and tapping holes.
  • Tap handle capable of handling up to 3/8-16 taps.
  • Small hammer and punch for layout and assembly tasks.
  • 3-foot T-square for layout and alignment work on panels and enclosures.
