Position Summary

The Head Coach for Varsity Girls Basketball is responsible for leading and developing a competitive, educationally grounded, and character-driven basketball program at Erie High School. The Head Coach will foster positive communication and collaboration among Erie Public Schools, student-athletes, families, feeder programs, and community partners.

This individual is expected to promote academic excellence, sportsmanship, leadership, and good citizenship while serving as a positive role model and mentor. The Head Coach will oversee all aspects of the girls basketball program and work to build a sustainable program that supports student-athlete development from middle school through high school in alignment with PIAA and NFHS standards.

Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to the Director of Athletics and the Building Principal.

Qualifications

• Prior successful coaching experience in basketball preferred
• Previous varsity-level coaching experience preferred
• Thorough knowledge of PIAA bylaws and NFHS Basketball Rules
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective practice plans, game strategies, and player development programs
• Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
• Ability to motivate, mentor, and develop student-athletes both athletically and academically
• Experience working with diverse student populations preferred
• Ability to build positive relationships with athletes, parents, staff, officials, and community members
• Commitment to developing a year-round basketball program and feeder system
• Ability to support student-athletes in pursuing post-secondary academic and athletic opportunities
• Working knowledge of Erie Public Schools policies and procedures
• Must obtain and maintain required FBI, PA Criminal, and Child Abuse Clearances

PIAA / NFHS Compliance & Expectations

The Head Coach must demonstrate a thorough understanding of and strict adherence to all Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) bylaws, policies, and regulations, as well as all National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules.

The Head Coach is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the Girls Basketball program including practices, competitions, athlete eligibility, conduct, safety protocols, recruiting restrictions, and coaching behavior are fully compliant with PIAA, NFHS, District 10, and Erie Public Schools requirements.

The Head Coach must:

• Maintain current knowledge of PIAA bylaws and NFHS rule updates
• Complete all required PIAA, PDE, and NFHS coaching education and sport-specific certifications
• Enforce rules related to eligibility, transfers, attendance requirements, practice limitations, and seasons of participation
• Model and promote sportsmanship and ethical conduct in accordance with NFHS standards
• Ensure student-athlete safety through proper supervision and adherence to NFHS guidelines
• Cooperate fully with the Athletic Director and Building Principal on all compliance matters
• Promote a positive educational environment consistent with the mission of Erie's Public Schools

Failure to comply with PIAA or NFHS regulations may result in disciplinary action, up to and including removal from coaching duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervise and instruct student-athletes in compliance with NFHS Basketball Rules and PIAA regulations
• Plan, organize, and conduct practices, contests, summer activities, and skill development opportunities
• Develop and implement offensive, defensive, conditioning, and player development programs
• Monitor and support academic eligibility, attendance, and conduct of student-athletes
• Ensure all athletes are properly registered, cleared, rostered, and eligible for participation
• Promote leadership, teamwork, accountability, and sportsmanship within the program
• Maintain accurate records, statistics, inventories, and equipment control
• Ensure all uniforms and equipment are accounted for prior to stipend disbursement
• Collaborate with middle school coaches to support program continuity and athlete development
• Attend athletic department meetings, league meetings, and district functions as required
• Communicate effectively with athletes, families, administration, and community stakeholders
• Support multi-sport participation while encouraging student-athlete development
• Assist in promoting the program through community engagement and positive public relations efforts

Off-Season Responsibilities

• Develop and oversee off-season strength and conditioning opportunities in accordance with PIAA regulations
• Organize and supervise open gyms, summer leagues, camps, and skill development opportunities
• Participate in and support program fundraising efforts as approved by the Athletic Department
• Collaborate with youth and middle school basketball programs to strengthen the feeder system
• Develop year-round plans for athlete skill development and program growth
• Assist with player recruitment and retention within Erie Public Schools

• Maintain high expectations for academic and athletic success

Other Duties

• Attend staff meetings, clinics, professional development activities, and mandatory athletic department meetings
• Complete all required district, state, and PIAA training requirements
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director, Building Principal, or other administrator

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated by the Director of Athletics and/or the Building Principal.
