Description Registered Nurse – 5 West/Abdominal Transplant, Urology, and Plastic Surgery Unit Schedule: 36 hours/week | 12-hour shifts (Day: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM or Night: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM) Shift Options: Rotating Benefits: Full‑time position eligible for comprehensive benefits package Unit Overview: 5 West is a specialized 15‑bed inpatient unit providing advanced care to patients undergoing abdominal transplant, urologic, and complex plastic surgery procedures. Urology & Plastic Surgery Collaboration: 5 West serves as the inpatient hub for the nationally ranked UNC Urology Department, offering individualized, coordinated, and compassionate care alongside our expert physician partners. Additionally, our team provides specialized care for high‑risk plastic surgery patients, often involving reconstructive grafts and complex wound management needs. Summary: Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care using the nursing process in a hospital setting. Responsibilities Education – Participate in identifying and meeting own learning needs. Attend education programs, use patient education materials, assess readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers, assess developmental level of patient and factors affecting ability to learn. Evaluation of Care – Identify expected patient outcomes, seek guidance in plan of care revisions, participate in interdisciplinary discussions, communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care. Implementation – Demonstrate competence in care of patients with complex problems, perform bedside point‑of‑care testing, utilize organization and nursing standards, policies, and procedures, organize and prioritize care, consult resources in a timely fashion regarding complex care issues and high‑risk discharge planning. Leadership – Develop goals to promote professional growth, achieve goals within identified timeframe, knowledge of intra/interdepartmental collaboration, participate in unit goals and performance improvement, promote cost‑effective care, give feedback to co‑workers, promote a safe, clean, and secure environment. Patient Assessment – Recognize data from complex situations to determine priorities, include appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs, synthesize assessment data, assess and anticipate discharge needs, develop relationships with families. Planning – Collaborate with patient/family, use multidisciplinary resources, communicate planning, address cultural and ethnic issues, prioritize tasks for complex patients. Research – Read relevant journals, bring ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability. Other Information Education Requirements: Graduation from a school of professional nursing. Must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Nursing or a Master’s degree with a major in Nursing within seven years if hired after January 6, 2014. Licensure/Certification Requirements: Licensed RN in North Carolina. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification. Professional Experience Requirements: One year of nursing experience.
