Lead Engineer– Protection and Control Location: Augusta, ME or Portland, ME Work Type: Office Salary Range: $111,332 – $145,800 Job Summary Responsible for electric system protection technology platforms in both Maine (Central Maine Power and Maine Electric Power Company) and New York (NYSEG and RG&E), including standards, training, and communication. The electric delivery system in Maine contains approximately 2,600 miles of transmission lines and 317 substations; in New York, approximately 5,600 miles and 621 substations (total of 8,200 miles and 965 substations). Consult and guide project engineers on protection engineering for electric transmission and substation system protection projects to ensure system reliability and safety. Lead the Protection Engineering group across Avangrid in their technical training and development, evaluate and implement new technology platforms, and ensure all protection system standards and designs meet applicable codes and standards (IEC, IEEE, NESC, FERC, NERC, NPCC, NYISO, ISO‑NE, NY PSC, and ME PUC). Liaison across operating companies, global affiliates, other departments, outside groups, and agencies to contribute to the development of the system protection strategy. Key Responsibilities Guide engineering design, estimating, and analysis of electric transmission and substation protection systems to support capital construction budgets while maintaining performance. Oversee protection system platforms, including settings, testing, commissioning, and coordination with global affiliates and contractors (≈20% of time). Coordinate development of the system protection platform for Avangrid, including integration, settings, networking, engineering criteria, construction standards, design and equipment specifications, integration schemes, automation configurations, commissioning plans and requirements for engineering suppliers and contractors. Oversee evaluation and demonstration of new technology in terms of safety, cost, and efficiencies; implement to enhance power system performance (≈25% of time). Lead engineering studies to evaluate equipment and protection system performance, analyze operational issues, and support system reliability and operational efficiency (≈15% of time). Provide expertise and guide analysis of transmission fault event operations to ensure protection schemes function as intended; produce clear fault analysis reports with corrective actions and lessons learned (≈15% of time). Represent the company on regional and national committees (≈10% of time). Lead and guide the technical development of the Protection Engineering group (≈15% of time). Provide technical leadership on complex projects with wide impact; mentor and develop team technical skills. Collaborate across departments; liaison with contractors regarding company policy, standards, and best practices. Work independently with minimal supervision; exercise autonomous decision‑making and strong diagnostic and problem‑solving skills. Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology (Master’s preferred). Professional engineering license preferred. A minimum of 7+ years of technical experience in protection engineering or a related field. Expert knowledge of engineering design, national and international standards, and compliance requirements associated with power system protection. Proficiency in theoretical engineering, planning, operations, construction, and field application. Experience performing economic analyses of engineering alternatives and developing business cases for stakeholders. Ability to document, review, and approve engineering work to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and contract requirements. Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory standards and requirements. Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills to drive change and adoption of new technologies across operating companies and international affiliates. Expertise in protection coordination analysis, project management, cost estimating, budgeting, and least‑cost planning. Safety leadership and adherence to all safety regulations in process and procedures development. Comprehensive understanding of power engineering theory, application, standards, design, test, commissioning, and analysis.
