In this role, you'll help maintain and repair a diverse fleet of City vehicles and equipment, including transit buses, trucks, heavy equipment, mowers, and small engines. You'll work alongside experienced mechanics who are committed to sharing their knowledge and helping teammates grow their technical skills.

The Equipment Mechanic I performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on all City vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to: buses, automobiles and trucks, and off highway equipment. Additional duties include record-keeping; procurement of parts tools, and supplies; and operation of equipment. This position may also perform work of a lower classification. The Equipment Mechanic I reports to the Fleet Services Manager, and may receive limited guidance from the Equipment Mechanic II. This position will receive work assignments from and will have work assignments assessed by the Shop Foreman.

Responsibilities include:

• Routine maintenance inspection and service
• Equipment maintenance and repair
• Equipment fabrication
• Record keeping & purchasing
• Equipment operation
• Clean vehicles
• Facility and grounds maintenance (wash and fueling areas)

Qualifications include:

• Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. and two years of vocational training in vehicle and equipment mechanics and welding (additional years working as a journeyman mechanic may substitute for vocational training).
• Experience: Two years of experience as a mechanic, including work with both heavy and light duty gas and diesel equipment.
• Required Certifications/Licenses: Valid Oregon driver license and possess (or ability to obtain within three months of hire) an Oregon Commercial Driver License - Class B with passenger and air brake endorsements, refrigerant handling certification, and a forklift operator's certification. ASE certification is encouraged and supported, but not required at this time.
• Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Work Environment: This position performs repair and maintenance tasks both in the city shop and in the field. The individual in this position is frequently exposed to a variety of hazardous materials and noise. Physical Requirements: Work is performed at the Fleet Services Shop and in the field in all weather conditions. The work requires bending, climbing, crawling, lifting up to 100 pounds, pulling, pushing, standing, stooping, and walking. Driving is required. Cognitive Functions: This position requires complex mechanical problem-solving, the ability to communicate with others in occasionally adversarial situations, and the ability to work independently. Tools/Equipment Used: Requires a personal set of handtools. In addition to basic hand tools, this position will use City equipment including but not limited to: truck and bus lifting equipment, welders, plasma cutter, forklift, tire mounting/balancing equipment, and various computerized diagnostic equipment.
