Safety Manager

Provide leadership in the implementation of the company’s safety and health programs at a production location. Anticipate, recognize, and evaluate workplace conditions that may cause workers’ injury or illness. Supervise and ensure compliance with the company’s philosophy, policies, procedures, and governmental regulations. Essential Position Responsibilities Ensure the continuous improvement of Safety and Health Programs. Work with the Director of Safety and facility managers to identify best practices and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices. Coordinate and facilitate training in safety programs, procedures, regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment. Provide facility managers with training material that is effective and easily comprehended by site audience. Develop effective safety training presentations for employee orientation and annual safety training. Develop and grow effective safety trainers. Develop, train and implement site‑specific emergency management procedures. Identify, make recommendations, and assist in the abatement of workplace hazards. Monitor job sites and processes for adherence to Safety and Health programs and OSHA standards by overseeing inspections, recommending corrective measures, and preparing for OSHA safety audits and investigations. Lead work‑related injury and illness investigations. Communicate safety issues to management with solutions to abate hazards. Assist in regulatory inspections and abatements. Create action registers and lead abatement strategies for cited hazards. Demonstrate working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, DOL, and EPA regulations, audits, and reporting. Guide management in understanding general industry standards and federal agencies. Support the Director of Safety to ensure regulatory reports are completed timely (e.g., OSHA 300 logs, BLS annual reports, EPA Tier II, and EPA Risk Management Plan submissions). Work with managers and employees to build a strong safety culture. Support safety incentive programs encouraging hazard reporting. Develop and lead Facility Safety Committees. Foster a culture where everyone is responsible for their own safety and learning to become safety advocates. Assist in the continuous improvement of Workers’ Compensation strategies. Possess working knowledge of state and federal Workers’ Compensation laws. Distinguish compensable from non‑compensable injuries. Ensure all Workers’ Compensation reports are accurate and compliant with the law. Identify questionable claims and coordinate with the Director of Safety to resolve them. Implement resources and procedures to identify malingering claims. Support initiatives to reduce compensable claims and assist in claim closure. Assist in developing job rotation schedules for high‑risk positions to mitigate cumulative trauma disorders. Maintain contact with employees with compensable injuries and ensure information and documentation are provided to the Third Party Administrator (TPA) and respondent attorney. Assist in the continuous improvement and implementation of Loss Prevention and Security strategies. Protect employees, visitors, contractors, and company properties from harm or theft. Contribute to crisis response planning for incidents such as workplace violence, protests, and terrorist attacks. Participate as a member of the team. Contribute to development, communication, and implementation of team concepts, programs, and policies; coordinate work to align with best practices; attend meetings; encourage cohesiveness and proactively resolve issues to achieve organizational synergy. Other Responsibilities and Standards Familiarity with Simmons’ operating systems (e.g., quality, security, LEAN) and the position’s role in supporting these systems, including understanding the impact of actions on the systems and communicating concerns and improvement ideas. Physical Activities and Requirements Enters and locates information on a computer; visually verifies information (often in small print); communicates with customers, vendors, or employees by phone, in person, or via e‑mail; may present information to small or large groups. Must be able to work in various temperatures; move about in a manufacturing environment and surrounding property; may travel by car or plane to various locations. Must be able to stand for 50% of an 8‑hour work day, ascend/descend stairs and ladders to a minimum height of 20 ft. Protective Equipment and Travel Must be able to don and wear PPE such as steel‑toe shoes, hearing protection, and other required PPE to assess potential hazards. Travel: Must be able to travel for at least 5 hours by vehicle or plane; overnight stays may be required. Experience and Education Technical Experience: 2 years minimum in Safety & Health program development and implementation. Industry Experience: Minimum 5 years in industry experience; preference for Poultry, Pet Food, Feed Ingredient, or similar food manufacturing organizations. Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety or related field, or equivalent certifications (e.g., SHEP, CSHO) or willingness/ability to complete certifications or 4 years related work experience.
