Investment Officer III, Real Assets

Job Description and Duties

The Investment Office’s Real Assets division is seeking an Investment Officer III with strong analytical skills and a collaborative mindset to support the Strategy, Portfolio Analysis, Risk & Research (SPARR) team and drive our CalPERS mission.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Lead the Real Assets Risk Management & Insurance Program, overseeing policy renewals, coverage structures, compliance, and market engagement.
• Evaluate portfolio level risk exposures across geography, structural attributes, operations, and tenants; recommend mitigation and insurance strategies aligned with investment objectives.
• Conduct macro, market, and sector research to inform portfolio construction and Real Assets strategic positioning.

Telework Information : This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite, per week.

Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025). PLP 2025 directs that each employee shall receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. The salary range(s) included in the job advertisement do not reflect the 3 percent reduction in pay.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

• Possession of a business degree, or certifications such as CFA, CPA, CAIA, or other equivalent financial or accounting certifications.
• At least 3 years of work experience in the Real Estate or Infrastructure industry in research, Commerical Real Estate insurance, governance.
• Advanced written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to data accuracy and integrity
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple workstreams, deadlines, and competing priorities
• Ability to work independently and within cross-functional technical teams
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel functions
• Hands-on experience with database systems, data mining techniques, and data modeling concepts
• High degree of initiative, professionalism, and confidentiality in high-volume, fast-paced environments
• Proven ability to adapt to changing requirements, priorities, and project timelines
