School Nurse

The school nurse is responsible for implementing the school health program, assisting with student well-being and completing health related tasks; does related work as required.

The school nurse maintains and updates student health records, immunization records, emergency information, and required reports. They document clinic services in the Student Information System and ensure compliance with confidentiality laws, IDEA, diabetes care requirements, and other health regulations. They perform related clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplicating.

The school nurse administers medications and prescribed medical procedures with proper authorization. They provide routine and emergency first aid, assist sick or injured students and staff until additional help arrives, and manage outbreaks of infectious illnesses in coordination with health authorities. They provide health-related counseling sensitive to student needs and call parents of ill students, assisting ill students as needed until parent arrival.

The school nurse may develop or assist with development of Individual Health Care Plans for students with medical conditions, including allergies, and educate appropriate staff on necessary components of such health care plan including criteria for medical emergencies and specific actions to take.

The school nurse informs and advises administrators and staff on student health issues, within privacy regulations. They train and maintain a list of staff as clinic backups in First Aid/CPR/Heimlich and medication administration. They provide guidance and training to staff on procedures for students with special health needs, including IHCPs and emergency responses (e.g., allergies, diabetes).

The school nurse maintains and secures the school clinic, supplies, and medications (including controlled substances). They develop or assist with Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and refer additional health concerns as appropriate to a guidance counselor, school psychologist, physician, Child Protective Services, school administrator or health department officials.

The school nurse performs other health-related duties as assigned.

The school nurse must have a valid state license as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Practical Nurse, to practice professional nursing in Virginia. They must have excellent organizational and communication skills, be committed to the goals of the program and approach, have love and respect for children, and evidence of efficacy and willingness to be a team player. They must be able to provide and receive constructive feedback, show commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse populations, and desire to work with students and their families in under-resourced communities. They must have verbal, written, and technological (computer/internet) skills, ability to build relationships and influence students, staff, community members & families, support teachers in the development of collaborative and co-teaching strategies, support teachers in the utilization of data-driven and differentiated instructional techniques, work with experienced staff in implementing positive discipline strategies, and engage in best practices to support achievement in under-resourced communities.

The school nurse has no supervisory responsibility and no travel requirements. The work environment and physical demands include frequently standing, sitting, walking, talking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle, type, or feel; and stooping, kneeling, or crouching.

This is a 10 month position with full benefits. Job status is open.
