Job Title: Surgical Assistant Profession: Surgical Assistant Specialty: Surgical Assistant Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 07:00 AM - 03:30 PM Hours per Shift: 8 Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Graduation from an approved Surgical Assistant Program (Required) Certifications: National certification from National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) (Preferred) National certification from Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) (Preferred) National certification from American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) (Preferred) Must-Have: Less than 1 year experience taking Second Call for Cardiac service line (Required) Description: The Cardiac First Assist works under the direction and supervision of the attending physician. This role involves providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that assist the surgeon in carrying out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The position is responsible for performing preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate the needs of surgical patients during the perioperative period. The First Assist will 1st and/or 2nd assist in cardiac surgical procedures. Additionally, this role requires covering regional call to support the cardiac surgery program across the system. Call coverage will also include transplant, both donor and recipient. This requires the ability to travel by car, ambulance, plane, and helicopter. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Complying with all policies and standards is essential. Specific duties and responsibilities will be provided during orientation. The role must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for patients. Annual training, the Code of Conduct, and policies and procedures are in place to address the appropriate use of PHI in the workplace. The Surgical Assistant will support various state-of-the-art surgeries and procedures, providing a well-rounded experience in coronary, valve, transplant, robotic, and structural heart disease, including hybrid structural and aortic interventions. Cardiac First Assistants support every cardiac surgery case across the system in and out of the operating room, including emergencies and procedures in the cardiac catheterization lab. BLS certification is required.
