Junior Specialist (70% appointment)

Job Description The Melanoma Molecular Discovery Laboratory investigates melanoma, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic vulnerabilities. Our focus includes study of oncogenes, tumor suppressors, and genomic instability. This Junior Specialist position is a 70% fixed‑appointment offering hands‑on experience with cutting‑edge genomics approaches and functional studies in a collaborative environment within the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at Mission Bay and Mt. Zion. Research projects focus on melanoma disease mechanisms and involve culturing cell lines, quantifying mRNA and protein levels, CRISPR perturbations, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloning. The specialist will perform molecular biology (nucleic acid extraction, PCR, Western blot) and staining techniques for tissues and cells (immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, light microscopy, etc.). • Culturing cell lines and performing molecular biology assays (nucleic acid extraction, PCR, Western blot).
• Quantifying mRNA and protein levels.
• Conducting CRISPR perturbations and cloning experiments.
• Analyzing tissue images using artificial intelligence and machine learning.
• Performing immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining and light microscopy.

Required Qualifications Graduation with a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) or at least four years of research experience. Scientific curiosity and a desire to contribute. Organizational skills with the ability to work independently. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to adhere to all campus safety policies. Demonstrated motivation and conscientiousness. Attention to detail and ability to clearly document experiments. Knowledge of molecular biology and genetics. Previous experience using artificial intelligence to analyze tissue images. Candidates must meet the requirements by the time of appointment. Applicant materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission. Preferred Qualifications Previous laboratory research experience. Physical Requirements Good visual acuity and accurate color discrimination. Excellent manual dexterity and familiarity using delicate instrumentation. Occasional lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Exposure to malodorous vapors, low‑dose radiation, toxic chemicals, acids, and carcinogenic substances. Long periods of standing and/or sitting. Additional Information Qualified applicants will be considered for a salary range of $55,000–$58,600.
