Physician (Hospitalist)

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet the specific eligibility requirements as outlined by VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

• United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy).
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Completion of an approved residency training program leading to eligibility for board certification, or one of the following alternatives:
  • One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or first year of residency) followed by two years of independent practice.
  • Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States.
• For physician residents in accredited programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements, appointment as a Physician Resident Provider (PRP) may be granted on an intermittent basis.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Eligible for a faculty appointment with the University of Arizona.
• American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification.
• Board‑eligible or board‑certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Attend as the attending physician in the Hospitalist Division, providing patient care during the daytime shift (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM).
• Teach and supervise residents, interns, and medical students.
• Perform core Internal Medicine invasive procedures and maintain proficiency through refresher training in the simulation laboratory.
• Participate in quality improvement activities and comply with all VA and SAVAHCS regulations.
• Support the supervision and training of residents and medical students rotating through the Hospitalist Division.
• Maintain American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification and pursue additional certifications as required.
