Transportation Specialist Position Title: Transportation Specialist Department: Bridge Division: 9 Report to: Transportation Manager FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Location: 200 NE 21st Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73105 Position Summary Responsible for planning, supervising, and performing technical and professional level transportation work. Tasks may span research, planning and design, survey, environmental studies, bid lettings, construction, maintenance, or project management. Basic Purpose Participants in this job family handle all phases of highway and bridge construction, field management of utilities or property appraisal and acquisition, relocation assistance, traffic operations, materials testing and sampling, and laboratory management. Typical Functions Perform sampling and testing of materials for highway construction and maintenance; conduct plant inspections and prepare materials certifications. Survey grade and alignment of highways using survey equipment. Collect statistics and documentation about the state highway system. Conduct traffic studies to support transportation system improvements. Perform or supervise bid letting functions, such as developing bid proposals from design plans, incorporating revisions, and disseminating information to contractors. Inspect, review, or oversee contractors, consultants, or utility relocations associated with construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and contracts; prepare progressive and final estimates. Plan and review transportation systems (rail, public transportation, waterways, highways); determine existing service levels and future needs; consider social, economic, and environmental effects. Perform real estate duties—property appraisal, acquisition of real property, or relocation assistance; prepare plans and reports for right-of-way projects. Audit the effectiveness of research programs, adequacy of right-of-way plans, support of planning decisions, reliability of materials testing, and accuracy of construction documentation. Supervise employees in any area of transportation work. Level Descriptor Levels vary by complexity of duties, required expertise, and supervisory responsibility. Education and Experience Level I: No specific education or experience required. Level II: One year of transportation-related work; or equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting two college courses in mathematics, natural science, engineering, or closely related field for the required year. Level III: Three years of transportation-related work; or equivalent combination, substituting 30 semester hours per year of required experience, including two college courses in mathematics, natural science, engineering, or closely related field. Level IV: Four years of transportation-related work; or equivalent combination, substituting 30 semester hours per year of required experience, including two college courses in mathematics, natural science, engineering, or closely related field. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of basic geometry and algebra; basic laboratory equipment; construction materials; and the English language. Ability to measure distance, collect data, operate computer and transportation-related equipment. Additional Duties Supports statewide bridge inspection operations and data integrity, ensuring compliance with federal regulations and efficient communication with partners. Works with a Bridge Management database and assists with revision and update of Bridge Inspection Manuals. Special Requirements Valid driver’s license required for travel. Willingness and ability to fulfill all job-related travel. Availability to take and pass a Physical Abilities Demonstration if required. Possible registration or certification in a designated profession or occupation based on specific work performed. Some positions may be safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. 427.8.
