Overnight Shelter Staff Full-Time | Emergency Youth Shelter

Overnight Shift: 11:30 PM – 8:00 AM (40 Hours/Week)
Starting Pay: $21.00/hour + Overnight Shift Differential
Some Weekend Availability Required

About the Role

As an Overnight Youth Support Specialist, you'll help ensure the safety, wellbeing, and comfort of youth and young adults staying in our Emergency Shelter during overnight hours.

You'll provide supportive supervision throughout the night, conduct wellness and safety checks, assist with morning routines, and help young people start each day feeling safe, respected, and prepared for what's ahead.

Working alongside a dedicated team of youth advocates, case managers, and community partners, you'll play an essential role in creating a consistent, trauma-informed environment where young people can build trust, develop life skills, and move toward greater independence.

What You'll DoCreate a Safe and Supportive Environment

• Monitor the shelter throughout the overnight hours by conducting regular safety and wellness checks.
• Maintain a calm, welcoming, and respectful environment for all youth.
• Support evening-to-morning transitions between the Emergency Shelter and Youth Resource Center.
• Assist with morning wake-ups, breakfast, hygiene needs, and daily departures.
• Help maintain clean, organized, and welcoming living spaces, common areas, restrooms, and sleeping rooms.

Build Trusting Relationships

• Develop positive relationships with youth through empathy, consistency, and respect.
• Utilize Trauma-Informed Care, Positive Youth Development, and Harm Reduction principles in every interaction.
• Encourage healthy decision-making, personal responsibility, and independence.
• Support youth in accessing food, hygiene supplies, community resources, and case management services.
• Serve as a positive role model while maintaining healthy professional boundaries.

Respond with Compassion and Confidence

• Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support when needed.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies while consulting supervisors and on-call staff.
• Promote a low-barrier, non-judgmental environment where youth feel emotionally and physically safe.
• Document incidents, observations, and shift updates to ensure continuity of care.

Contribute to a Strong Team

• Communicate effectively with colleagues across shifts to ensure seamless support for youth.
• Maintain inventory of shelter supplies and report maintenance or safety concerns.
• Participate in supervision, staff meetings, training, and professional development.
• Help strengthen our program by collaborating with teammates and sharing ideas for continuous improvement.

What We're Looking For

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Additional education in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or a related field is preferred.
• Experience working with youth, particularly youth experiencing homelessness, trauma, or crisis, is highly valued.
• Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care, Positive Youth Development, Harm Reduction, and de-escalation techniques preferred.
• Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in fast-paced or emotionally challenging situations.
• Strong communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.
• Basic computer proficiency, including email, documentation, and data entry systems.
• Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team.
