Position Summary:

The Assistant Controller serves as the company's technical accounting resource and is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of the accounting function. This is a highly hands-on individual contributor role reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer.

The Assistant Controller leads the monthly close process, technical accounting, financial reporting, account reconciliations, audit support, accounting compliance, and accounting process improvement initiatives. The role provides technical leadership across the accounting organization, partnering closely with the Project Accountant, Inventory Clerk, Accounts Payable Specialist, Operations, Project Management, and executive leadership to ensure strong financial controls, accurate reporting, and scalable accounting processes.

The ideal candidate combines technical accounting expertise, accounting discipline, strong manufacturing and project accounting knowledge, advanced systems capabilities, and a proven track record of improving accounting processes while strengthening controls and increasing efficiency.

This role is particularly well suited for an experienced Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, Audit Manager, or Technical Accounting professional from a larger public or private enterprise environment who enjoys building scalable processes and maintaining hands-on involvement in the accounting function.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Financial Close & Reporting

• Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant financial reporting.
• Prepare and review journal entries, account analyses, financial schedules, and supporting workpapers.
• Own the balance sheet reconciliation process, ensuring all accounts are reconciled, supported, and reviewed on a timely basis.
• Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies, unreconciled balances, and process control issues.
• Assist with preparation of monthly financial statements, management reporting packages, and ad hoc financial analyses for executive leadership.

Technical Accounting & Compliance

• Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company accounting policies.
• Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrity.
• Support tax compliance activities and coordination with external tax advisors.

Audit & External Reporting

• Serve as the primary accounting contact for external auditors.
• Lead audit preparation activities, including audit schedules, supporting documentation, account analyses, control narratives, and resolution of audit inquiries.
• Ensure the accounting function maintains audit-ready supporting documentation and workpapers throughout the year.
• Coordinate responses to external financial, tax, banking, and regulatory inquiries.

Cost Accounting & Operations Support

• Manage accounting processes related to manufacturing, inventory, and project-based operations.
• Maintain expertise in:
• Job costing
• Work-in-Process (WIP) accounting
• Percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
• Inventory valuation
• Standard costing
• Variance analysis
• Labor and overhead allocation
• Manufacturing cost accounting
• Partner closely with Operations and Project Management to monitor project profitability, analyze cost variances, improve forecasting accuracy, and identify opportunities to improve margins.
• Support inventory accounting processes, costing methodologies, and periodic physical inventory activities.

Cash Flow & Working Capital Management

• Monitor key working capital metrics including accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and cash flow.
• Assist the CFO in managing cash forecasting, liquidity planning, and working capital optimization.
• Identify opportunities to improve cash conversion and operational efficiency.

Process Improvement & Systems

• Identify, develop, and implement accounting process improvements that strengthen controls, reduce errors, improve reporting quality, and increase efficiency.
• Serve as a power user of the company's ERP and financial systems.
• Partner with operational and finance teams to improve automation, reporting capabilities, workflow efficiency, and data accuracy.
• Participate in ERP enhancements, system implementations, process redesign efforts, and reporting optimization initiatives.
• Leverage advanced Excel, reporting, and data analysis tools to improve financial processes and decision-making.

Documentation & Knowledge Transfer

• Develop and maintain clear accounting policies, process documentation, standard operating procedures, and training materials.
• Establish scalable and repeatable processes that can be effectively transferred to and executed by other team members.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to accounting staff and operational personnel without direct supervisory responsibility.

Cross-Functional Leadership

• Provide technical leadership and coordination across the accounting function, including partnership with Accounts Payable, Inventory Control, Payroll, and Project Accounting personnel.
• Collaborate effectively with Manufacturing Operations, Field Operations, Project Management, Sales, Human Resources, Engineering and executive leadership.
• Support the CFO with special projects, strategic initiatives, acquisitions, financing activities, and other business improvement efforts as needed.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
• CPA designation preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including significant responsibility for financial close, financial reporting, reconciliations, and audit support.
• Experience within a public company, large multi-entity organization, private-equity-backed company, or public accounting firm preferred.
• Demonstrated expertise in both manufacturing cost accounting and project-based/construction accounting environments required.

• Significant ERP experience required, including process improvement, reporting optimization, and systems implementation or enhancement initiatives.

• Advanced knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, account reconciliations, internal controls, and month-end close best practices.
• Deep understanding of manufacturing cost accounting, inventory accounting, project accounting, and revenue recognition.
• Expert-level Microsoft Excel skills, including advanced formulas, pivot tables, Power Query, financial analysis, and reconciliation techniques.
• Demonstrated success improving accounting processes through automation, standardization, workflow redesign, and system optimization.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and investigative skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to identify root causes of accounting and process issues and implement sustainable solutions.
• Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with executives, operational leaders, auditors, consultants, and external business partners.
• Proven ability to document complex processes, train others, and transfer knowledge effectively.
• Ability to influence and coordinate work across teams without direct supervisory authority.

Salary Range: $130,000 to $145,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience. xhyhwjd Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including skills, relevant experience, internal equity, and market conditions.
