SENIOR DIRECTOR of FINANCE

The mission of Maryland Family Network (MFN) is to ensure that very young children have strong families, quality early learning environments, and a champion for their interests. We work in collaboration with public and private funders, community-based organizations, parents, and other individuals and agencies to support those who care for young children as families strive to reach their goals. Through two-generation programs that support parents to become economically self-sufficient, raise healthy, successful children, and find quality child care; through regional services that help child care professionals improve their practice; and through public policy advocacy of programs and policies that benefit families with young children, MFN strives to ensure that all Maryland children are cared for by adults who are skilled to raise them in environments that are conducive to growth and development.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The purpose of the Senior Director of Finance position is to oversee the organization's financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audits, and regulatory compliance. This role ensures sound financial management practices that promote operational effectiveness, long-term sustainability, and programmatic impact. Collaborating closely with the Executive Leadership Team and the Senior Staff Leadership Team (SSLT), the Senior Director of Finance develops and aligns financial strategy with organizational and program priorities. Serving as a trusted strategic partner, this position provides actionable financial insights to support informed, mission-driven decision-making and acts as the organization's primary financial liaison and presenter to the Board of Directors.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Oversee accounting, general ledger, and fiscal functions, ensuring that systems are in place to guarantee timeliness, accuracy, and compliance with funding requirements
  • Provide strong fiscal management, ensuring grant compliance, and promoting responsible stewardship of resources in alignment with funder and regulatory requirements
  • Strengthen internal controls, maximize funding, and ensure the effective use of organizational resources
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and lead all internal and external audit processes
  • Ensure that MFN meets critical regulatory and legal compliance benchmarks
  • Leverages technology, systems, and team leadership to oversee cash flow planning, prepare and monitor budgets, develop forecasts, and track key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Provide oversight for and support directors in managing all budgets; create forecasts and internal financial plans and processes
  • Establish annual priorities and benchmarks and conduct regular reporting, measuring projections against actual performance. Manage finance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that are part of the MFN strategic plan
  • Develop and execute financial strategy by analyzing financial information, monitoring organizational performance, and supporting forward-looking financial planning to ensure MFN remains fiscally strong and compliant
  • Prepare and present financial reports and analyses to the Board of Directors
  • Drive best financial practices within MFN by creating a regular fiscal review process for all programs, keeping the senior leadership team, Board, and staff up to date on MFN's financial status, and serving as a point of reference for all growth plans and projects
  • Participate in all internal planning regarding MFN's proposed program expansion, to ensure alignment of program, outreach, and training plans with financial projections
  • Publicize and maintain the Finance Manual and create aligned processes for internal and external stakeholders
  • Remain abreast of new trends in the financial industry by attending conferences, participating in professional development, and sharing information with the senior leadership team
  • Oversee outsourced financial analysts, including assigning work, setting priorities, and scheduling tasks to ensure timely and accurate financial deliverables
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  • Lead or support financial system implementations and process improvements
  • Provide financial expertise for strategic initiatives, special projects, and cross-departmental teams
  • Develop and refine financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Serve as a key liaison with external partners such as auditors, banks, and financial advisors
  • Contribute to organizational strategy, planning, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Build relationships with banks, donors, vendors, outside consultants and others as needed
  • Supervise a finance team, including evaluating current contractual arrangements and building a top-tier internal finance team by actively recruiting, training, and developing staff as needed.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Scheduling or assigning work
  • Training (new hire training / day-to-day training/mentoring)
  • Overseeing outsourced accounting team
EXPERIENCE:
  • Eight (8) to ten (10) years nonprofit financial management experience
  • Budget with at least five (5) years of experience leading a team of finance and accounting professionals.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, and LICENSURE:
  • A bachelor's degree in the finance, accounting, or a related field from an accredited college or university is required; master's degree is preferred
MINIMUM TECHNICAL SKILLS and EXPERIENCE:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Forms, and PowerPoint
  • Experience using Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and/or other online meeting platforms
  • Experience with Smartsheet preferred
  • Ability to develop financial strategy and translate it into operational action
  • Strong financial management and planning skills, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis aligned with organizational goals
  • Deep knowledge of nonprofit financial management, grants, audits, and compliance
  • Knowledge of/ expertise in Public Grants management and accountability; contracts, and financial monitoring, including Uniform Guidance required
  • Expertise in financial oversight, federal audits, and robust financial management required
  • In-depth knowledge of risk management methods and the ability to create forecasting models required
  • Direct experience with accounting and financial management software required; experience with Sage Intacct a plus
IDEAL SOFT SKILLS:
  • Ability to translate financial data into actionable insights and clearly explain financial concepts and terminology to non-financial staff to support operational and programmatic decision-making
  • Highly collaborative leadership style
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, including experience presenting to boards
  • Ability to explain financial terms to non-fiscally oriented staff in simple language
ESSENTIAL LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred
