Responsibilities include preparing, packaging, labeling, and distributing unit-dose medications, outpatient prescriptions, and stock orders; delivering medications and supplies to patient care areas; and maintaining medication integrity through proper storage, rotation, and inventory control. The technician uses pharmacy information systems and departmental tools to document work, support workflow tracking and reporting as assigned, and may be scheduled in central pharmacy and/or specialized pharmacy areas based on operational needs. The role also includes organizing inventory, auditing medication storage areas, conducting safety and quality checks, escalating discrepancies, and handling controlled substances in accordance with policy. The technician may assist with onboarding and technical training and participate in departmental projects and quality/safety initiatives as assigned.Required CertificationBoard Certified Pharmacy Technician from a nationally approved technician certification board (PTCB CPhT or NHA ExCPT) required.Does This Position Require Patient Care?NoEssential FunctionsPrepare, fill, label, repackage, and distribute medications and supplies accurately for pharmacist verification.Manage medication inventory, storage areas, automated dispensing cabinets, returns, recalls, expired products, and investigational drugs.Handle controlled substances and sterile compounded preparations in compliance with applicable laws, USP standards, study protocols, and organizational policies.Operate pharmacy robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems to support safe and efficient pharmacy services.Maintain cleanroom standards through proper garbing, aseptic practices, cleaning, environmental monitoring, documentation, and competency testing, if applicable.Communicate professionally with patients, caregivers, pharmacists, and clinical staff to gather information, triage inquiries, and coordinate medication needs.Support pharmacy operations by training junior staff, preparing reports, completing audits, assisting with workflow and inventory control, and performing assigned duties.QualificationsEducationHigh School Diploma or Equivalent requiredCan this role accept experience in lieu of a degree?NoLicenses and CredentialsPharmacy Technician License – Massachusetts requiredBoard Certified Pharmacy Technician from a nationally approved technician certification board (PTCB CPhT or NHA ExCPT) RequiredExperiencePharmacy technician 1-2 years requiredKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesUnderstand HIPAA privacy rules and will use discretion when handling patient-related information.Ability to read, interpret, and follow verbal and written instructions associated with assigned responsibilities.Ability to adhere to safety requirements for handling non-hazardous and hazardous medications in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.Proficient with math calculations associated with assigned responsibilities.Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.Ability to distinguish routine functions from those requiring a pharmacist's professional judgment.Ability to work with sustained attention and care on routine, repetitive tasks.Knowledge and ability to handle controlled substances in accordance with state regulations.Multi-task and prioritize tasks under time constraints.
