Accountant I – Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home Location: Bellevue, NE Hiring Agency: Veterans Affairs – Agency 28 Hiring Rate: $17.956/hr (base rate) plus $3 differential per hour, total $20.956/hr. Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. Responsibilities Determine member eligibility for benefits and initiate claims to appropriate agencies. Research records and interview members and their families while ensuring the timely gathering of financial information and filing of forms. Collect financial data to calculate admission and annual member contribution. Assist members, families, or financial representatives with filing annual financial reports and documents with courts, the Nebraska Veterans Home, and State and Federal agencies. Answer inquiries and provide professional guidance in the resolution of accounting problems and/or member trust/member contribution problems. Oversee all designated departments in the Business Manager’s absence. Post data to and reconcile ledgers, journals, worksheets, and accounts to ensure and verify completeness and accuracy. Write and disseminate instructions, manuals, and procedures relating to accounting and financial reporting to facilitate employee production. Collaborate with the Business Manager to provide account analysis and reports for use in preparing the organizational budget. Assist in collecting member contribution, work with past‑due accounts for maximum collections, and submit write‑off information for bad debts. Coordinate Veteran benefits with Veterans Service Officers. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Post‑high school coursework or vocational education in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field, OR experience performing accounting functions including interpreting and analyzing financial data. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of accounting principles and practices, equipment and computer systems, and management. Ability to learn and apply principles, concepts, regulations, and procedures of accounting systems. Skill in working collaboratively with a variety of people. Proficiency with good oral and written communication. Ability to maintain records accurately and prepare accurate reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships; handle changing needs; plan and lay out work; attain knowledge of terminology, policies and procedures; work accurately with figures; compose memos or letters using general guidelines; use tact, good judgement and accuracy to give precise facts; handle confidential information; work under direction and independently follow established practices.
