Lower (Elementary) School Counselor Position Summary The school counselor reports to the Director of College Counseling and Guidance and collaborates with the Chief of Academics and Lower School Dean of Students; together, they support Brownell Talbot’s mission. Responsibilities The school counselor helps create a safe and caring environment and provides short‑term, solution‑focused counseling services for early years and lower school students. They must be willing to be an active member of the life of the school, which will periodically include evening and weekend commitments. They must successfully manage the varied demands and intensities of a busy office, seamlessly transition from each school level, and possess strength in both written and oral communication as well as classroom management. The counselor is detail‑oriented, flexible, creative, responsible, and professional; counselors adhere to the American School Counseling Code of Ethics, especially in respect to maintaining confidentiality. Required Qualifications Holds (or is eligible to obtain) a Nebraska Department of Education School Counselor Endorsement. Master’s degree in school counseling or counseling. Experience working in a collaborative environment with a range of constituent groups, such as students, families, faculty, staff, and administration from diverse backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications and Experience Classroom teaching experience. Curriculum writing and facilitation of social emotional learning. Experience with the American School Counselor Association National Model. Technological proficiencies including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, databases, and student management systems. Personal Qualities Positive attitude. Excellent written and verbal skills. Strong organizational skills. Proven success within a work setting requiring collaboration, cooperation, and collegiality. Physical Requirements Able to sit, stand, type, twist, bend. Able to use computers, laptops. Able to lift 25-50 lbs. Other physical demands such as speaking, hearing, manual, and finger dexterity.
