Summary Protects lives and property of the citizens of Belleview by actively patrolling high‑crime areas, implementing plans of action to combat criminal activity with assistance of citizens. Reports to the Patrol Sergeant. Essential Job Functions Patrol Duties Patrols an assigned area to establish a presence, reduce opportunities for crime, detect criminal activity, and render service to the public. Remains alert and observant, drives a patrol car at high speed in response to emergencies, confronts suspects, proceeds to crime scenes, reads maps, conducts preliminary investigations, interviews witnesses, handles crowd control, and directs traffic. Reports Writes accident reports and narrative reports describing activities, investigations, and enforcement action. Prepares arrest warrants, search warrants, field notes, departmental forms, and maintains personal notes on assignments. Citizen Interaction Engages citizens during routine patrols, answers questions, calms upset individuals, interacts with residents, merchants, and persons with substance‑use problems, and communicates clearly and politely. Training Practices firearms skills, attends classes and workshops on police procedures, reads court decisions, statutes, ordinances, and department policies to stay informed. Court Preparation and Testimony Meets with attorneys, gathers evidence, and testifies in court regarding facts known first‑hand. Non‑Essential Functions Operates a computer. Performs other duties as assigned. Service High volume of customer service is performed in assisting the public and employees in person and by telephone. Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to absorb and remember facts and information. Ability to write effectively to produce clear, accurate and understandable reports. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate clearly and politely in oral and written form. Ability to read and comprehend police related materials. Ability to learn laws, city ordinances, methods, and procedures to apply them effectively. Ability to learn geographical layout of the city. Ability to endure sustained physical exhaustion and perform duties in unfavorable situations. Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or G.E.D. Completion of one‑year period as Belleview Probationary Police Officer. Criminal Justice Standards Training Certificate. Florida Operators Driver’s License. Work Environment 24/7 varying schedule with rotating shift schedule and 16‑week assignment periods. Approximately 50% of duties performed while riding in a patrol vehicle; remaining time spent investigating calls for service at various indoor and outdoor locations. Equipment includes patrol car, handcuffs, baton, portable radio, lights and sirens, spotlight, flashlight, service weapon, fire extinguisher, computer, and copier. Immediate supervisor available 65 % of the time by radio and telephone. Residency and Safety Equipment No residency requirement; must have a telephone. Safety equipment: ballistics vest, traffic vest, flashlight, rubber gloves, face mask. City Vehicle May be assigned a city vehicle full time based on eligibility and current duty assignment.
