Intermediate Care Technician

Summary This Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) position is located in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within the Department of Veteran Affairs – Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The role serves as an advanced technician for the ICU – Step-down Unit – and Postanesthesia Care Unit (PACU) for patients receiving treatment. Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of July 20, 2026. The following qualifications apply: English Language Proficiency – Applicants must be proficient in basic written and spoken English to serve in direct patient care positions. Specialized Experience – A minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑6 grade level. Experience may include recognizing and responding to life‑threatening situations, understanding legal/ethical considerations of critical care, taking and recording diagnostic signs, assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations, and supporting licensed personnel with complex care. Education – One year of graduate education or internship directly related to the position at the next lower grade level (minimum 18 semester hours). Part‑time qualifying as a proportion of a full‑time year. Apply only if academic institution is accredited. Combination of Education and Experience – Applicants may combine education and experience to meet total requirements. A transcript confirming academic credit is required. Preferred Military Experience – Experience as a Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, or Medical Technician (e.g., 4NOX, 4NOIC, HM8403) is highly desired. Physical Demands – The position requires lifting and moving patients and heavy objects over 45 pounds, carrying objects over 40 pounds for at least 200 feet, and exposure to infection and contagious disease. Safety precautions such as gloves, gowns, and masks are mandatory. Participants may encounter adverse weather and hazardous substances while responding to medical emergencies. Duties This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be July 20, 2026, and applicants will be referred on an “as needed” basis. NOTE: This posting will remain open until no longer needed but no later than August 20, 2026. Perform ongoing patient care duties in a critical care setting under the delegated authority of the supervising physician (licensed independent provider or advanced practice provider). Communicate effectively with supervising physicians to provide collaborative and timely patient care. Perform observation‑based screening and collect patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel. Assist in behavioral/psychiatric situations in a clinical care setting. Assist critical care licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex and potentially life‑threatening situations. Operate specialized medical equipment. Provide support, relief, and coverage at the central telemetry station. Perform specimen collection. Respond to medical emergencies on the facility grounds, including Rapid Response Team (RRT) – Code Blue – or medical transport team. Perform other duties as assigned within the training and competencies of the role.
