Juvenile Criminal Justice Counsel

Job Description – Juvenile Criminal Justice Counsel (26000439) Supreme Court of Ohio Location: Ohio Judicial Center, 65 South Front Street, Columbus, 43215 Unposting Date: Ongoing Schedule: Full-time Union: Exempt from Union Primary Job Skill: Attorney/Legal Overview The Juvenile Criminal Justice Counsel assists the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission (OCSC) in researching, developing, and recommending effective strategies related to criminal justice issues, including sentencing, diversion, access to justice, community supervision, and revising Ohio’s criminal statutes. The role prepares summary materials to make the law more workable for practitioners, and responds to routine inquiries. Responsibilities Assist the director in preparing commission work products and facilitate commission and committee meetings and general duties of the office. Monitor trends developed through case law and promising practices relative to criminal justice issues and disseminate pertinent information to the commission director, the commission and its committees, interested parties, and justice system partners. Conduct legal and non‑legal research. Write memos and other documents on criminal justice issues for the commission and provide legal advice on commission matters, as needed. Make presentations on the work of the commission and its committees, working committees, criminal justice seminars, judicial and court personnel educational courses, and other meetings and sessions. Write and edit Commission documents, including legislative drafting. Serve as liaison to the administration, relevant agencies, and other interest groups as designated by the commission director, and provide work direction to administrative staff and/or interns on specific tasks and/or projects. Perform other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required. Staff Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. At least two years of relevant experience in the criminal justice field; prior experience in the Juvenile Ohio Court System strongly preferred. Exceptional organization, communication, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated understanding of the commission’s work, procedures, and research. Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, prepare meaningful concise reports, distill and simplify complex statutes, work with diverse groups on policy development, and exhibit strong writing and communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, the internet, and Westlaw or Lexis and other legal research resources. Occasional travel within Ohio and occasional out-of-state travel; ability to work non‑standard work hours when appropriate. Ability to perform all aspects of the job with fairness, equity, patience, discretion, and confidentiality. Strong public speaking and sound grammar/writing abilities. Special requirement: Regular exposure to sensitive information and expectation to keep such information strictly confidential. Physical Requirements The position operates in a professional office environment. Travel on commission business, including the possibility of overnight stays, is expected and required. This role routinely uses standard office equipment, such as computers and phones. The employee may also be required to move about the office and building and other locations while traveling on commission business. The employee will regularly need to communicate and exchange information. Travel Requirements Requires ability to work extended hours as needed and to travel on court business, including overnight stays. Valid driver’s license required. Commission Expectations The commission expects the employee to adhere to all commission policies, guidelines, practices, and procedures; act as a role model; exhibit a professional manner in dealing with others; maintain constructive working relationships; maintain a positive and respectful approach with superiors, colleagues, and individuals; demonstrate flexible and efficient time management; prioritize workload; perform duties in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner; and communicate regularly with supervisors about work‑related issues. Supplemental Information This exempt unclassified position reports to the Director of the Criminal Sentencing Commission. Salary range: $89,627 - $128,045.
