Media Specialist (Grades: K-5) ADSY

Purpose Provide the leadership under the direction of Library Media Services to ensure that all students become effective users of ideas and information. Supervise and manage the school library/media center and its programs, providing services and resources that enable students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems (21st century skills). Engage learners through print and digital resources to create, share, and collaborate as global citizens. Serve as a teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to fully integrate the library/media center into the school’s instructional programs, demonstrating proficiency in a variety of instructional strategies. Major Responsibilities Use the TEK’s/SE’s and library curriculum products, including Library Scope and Sequence, as the foundation for instruction, providing group instruction and individualized guidance to help students locate resources and use research techniques. Prepare strategic plans to ensure the School Library Programs meet Texas Standards and Guidelines. Participate as an educational leader, equal partner, and change agent in curriculum development at campus and district levels, consulting with teachers on appropriate material use. Model and promote collaborative planning, cooperative teaching, and direct instruction based on learner needs and state standards. Promote the highest standards of conduct, ethics, and integrity in using the Internet and other resources, instructing students in ethical use of information. Provide ongoing learning opportunities for students and staff that foster stakeholder participation and promote technology and information literacy skills. Supervise Media Assistant(s), student aides, and manage multiple interruptions while multitasking under pressure. Deliver instructional access to library resources and facilities through flexible scheduling of classes, small groups, and individuals, fostering an environment with acceptable behavioral standards. Maintain a balanced, systematically organized collection of print and digital resources, ensuring relevance and compliance with district policies. Implement effective library management operations, including budgeting, purchasing, scheduling, facility maintenance, supervision, reporting, grant writing, circulation, and inventory oversight. Encourage high circulation, including inter‑library loans, to extend information access beyond the campus. Support academic rigor by integrating research and information processing skills to prepare students for college, workforce, and lifelong learning. Collaborate with the community and libraries to promote shared goals benefiting all students. Enforce discipline in accordance with Board policies and regulations. Support students’ right to freely select materials for enjoyment or information. Interact with students to promote positive attitudes toward the library program and a love of reading in a secure, age‑appropriate environment. Stay informed on students’ and staff’s information culture and incorporate this awareness into the program. Communicate effectively through oral, written, electronic, and non‑verbal means. Comply with all federal, state, and Board laws and regulations related to library/media services. Continuously evaluate and adjust the library/media center program based on statistical reports and findings. Engage in ongoing self‑evaluation and professional growth, maintaining active interest in relevant associations and publications. Perform all administrative tasks necessary to keep the library orderly, up‑to‑date, and functional. Perform all other tasks and duties related to the library program as assigned. Federal‑funded incumbents must comply with time and effort reporting requirements. Maintain regular, punctual attendance at the worksite. Work Environment The noise level is usually moderate. Travel throughout the district is integral to this role. A remote or alternate work arrangement is not an option for campus‑based employees; regular attendance and performing all duties at the school are essential job duties. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a directly related field with valid Texas Library certification; Master’s degree preferred. At least two years as a highly qualified teacher; bilingual skills are a plus. Working knowledge of library and information science. Demonstrated ability to instruct and manage students in a varied environment. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Willingness to remain current with the latest developments in the profession.
