Distribution Modernization Department Manager (Mid-Atlantic Region)

DescriptionThe Distribution Modernization (DMod) Department Manager provides the managerial direction and leadership for the Distribution Modernization department within Burns & McDonnell's Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Global Practice in the Mid-Atlantic Region (MAR). The role is accountable for building a high-performing, inclusive team; aligning people and workload with business needs; supporting profitable growth; and advancing safe, high-quality project delivery. The Department Manager works closely with MAR T&D leadership, national Distribution Modernization leadership, account and project managers, and other regional and global delivery teams. coordinate resources with other MAR departments, regional offices, national DMod teams and global delivery resources as appropriate.Recruit, assess, hire, onboard, develop and retain talent aligned with department needs, growth strategies, business objectives and Burns & McDonnell culture.Partner with Human Resources, Early Careers and educational partners to support experienced hiring, internships, new graduate recruiting and internal transfers.Coordinate team and mentor assignments with business line leaders, project managers and project engineers to support performance, development and succession planning.Conduct performance evaluations and development conversations, including onboarding check-ins, midyear reviews, annual reviews and ongoing coaching.Advocate for staff by listening to individual goals, providing timely feedback and creating development opportunities that strengthen technical, project management and leadership capabilities.Approve timecards and oversee appropriate charging practices and responsible investment of overhead labor and costs.Business and Financial PerformanceLead profitable and sustainable growth of the department and achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.Support development and execution of business plans and objectives, including strategies to diversify the department's clients, services and project portfolio.Develop and manage the department budget, staffing plan and expenditures in alignment with forecasted workload and regional priorities.Prepare and present workload, staffing and financial reports to regional and global practice leadership and applicable project managers.Monitor department performance and key metrics; identify risks and take timely action to improve utilization, productivity, quality and profitability.Implement and support company, global practice and regional programs, initiatives, objectives and key results.Technical Execution Quality and InnovationServe as a senior technical advisor and provide expert level guidance on distribution modernization engineering, design and project execution.Maintain technical proficiency and a strong connection to the core business line, its clients and its evolving service offerings.Coordinate qualified quality control reviewers and perform or support QA/QC reviews as needed.Monitor project and department initiatives and provide direction or corrective action to support safety, quality, schedule, productivity and budget objectives.Identify department training needs and develop or coordinate technical, project management and leadership training with other departments and offices.Champion innovation and continuous improvement by advancing tools, technology, standards and workflows that improve quality, consistency and efficiency.Business Development and CollaborationCollaborate with business line leaders, account managers, project managers, segment leads and marketing professionals to align staffing, project delivery and business development priorities.Contribute to client development, pursuits, proposals, interviews and negotiations to secure work that supports the department and MAR T&D strategy.Build strong relationships across MAR, other regional offices, national business lines and global delivery teams to share work, knowledge, resources and best practices.Serve in key project or client support roles where required, particularly for strategic accounts, new clients and emerging service offerings.Promote and support regional, global practice and company initiatives in coordination with senior management.QualificationsBachelor Degree in engineering, architecture, construction or related degree from accredited program and 7 years related professional experience in design and/or project management required.Previous leadership and/or management experience is preferable.Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.Must be expert in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Job Field: EngineeringJob Type: ExperiencedSchedule: Full-timeTravel: Yes, 25 % of the Time
