Veterinary General Manager

Maine Veterinary Medical Center (MVMC) is seeking a General Manager to serve as the senior executive leader of a high-performing, multi-specialty referral hospital generating more than $40M in annual revenue. This is a senior leadership role with real weight: financial performance, people, and culture, at a hospital where the work genuinely matters.
MVMC is a multi-specialty and emergency referral hospital in Scarborough, Maine, and the region's premier destination for advanced veterinary care. WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Operational Excellence -You will define and enforce the hospital's operating system to optimize patient flow and throughput, align cross-departmental coordination, and establish the SOPs and escalation frameworks that keep the hospital running smoothly by design
- Strategic Leadership -You will set the long-term direction of the hospital in partnership with Rarebreed leadership, identify growth opportunities, and position MVMC competitively in the New England market, translating vision into execution across every department.
- Financial Performance You own the hospital P&L. That means building and managing the annual budget, driving revenue and margin performance, analyzing variances, and holding the leadership team accountable for their financial outcomes.
- Workforce & Retention You'll develop a forward-looking staffing plan across clinician, technician, support, and administrative teams; own retention strategy; monitor burnout signals; and drive a culture where people want to stay and grow.
- Medical Partnership You and the Medical Director lead as integrated peers. You'll provide the operational and business platform that makes clinical excellence possible — and you'll be the go-to partner for physicians when operational issues need to be resolved with urgency.
- Leadership Development - You'll develop a leadership bench that can carry the hospital forward — identifying talent, developing managers through real coaching and structured development, and holding leaders accountable for the performance of their teams.
- Risk Management- OSHA, DEA, controlled substances, incident management, safety and emergency protocols — you own it, proactively.
- Client & Community Experience You'll champion the client experience and referral relationships that make MVMC the specialty destination of choice in this market.
- Capital & Facilities You're the hospital-side owner for equipment, facilities, and capital planning and the operational lead for any hospital projects.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree required; MBA or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred
- 8+ years of progressive leadership experience in veterinary, human healthcare, or comparable service-based operations of the same and size and capacity
- 4+ years in a senior operational leadership role with full P&L ownership
- Complex multi-departmental management experience; experience leading other leaders required
- Specialty veterinary, multi-specialty referral, or comparable healthcare environment strongly preferred
- Experience leading through periods of growth or organizational transition preferred
- Strong financial acumen including P&L ownership, budgeting, variance analysis, and KPI management
- High emotional intelligence; ability to lead through influence and authority
- Ability to partner with medical leaders as a true peer
- Demonstrated ability to make and defend difficult decisions under pressure
- Proven track record of financial performance, operational improvement, and team development
- Capacity to execute on multiple workstreams in a high-stakes, fast-moving environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with staff, leaders, clinicians, clients, and corporate partners
