Overview Diagnostic Radiology Technologist (Mammography) (GS-0647-8) - Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA The purpose of the position is to serve as a Mammography Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The work requires the incumbent to independently perform very difficult and highly specialized radiographic examinations of the breast (mammography) utilizing a variety of specialized procedures that require precise positioning and produce quality results. Hours are 7:30am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday. Responsibilities Duties Independently perform a complex and diverse array of screening and diagnostic mammography examinations. Manage patient schedules for patient arrivals, proper arrival procedures, interviewing, and departure of both male and female patients. Assist the radiologist(s) and other health care providers with needle localizations, breast ultrasound studies, and other related breast health examinations. Provide expert advice in mammographic imaging to enhance patient evaluation and care. Collect, file, and maintain documentation related to the performance of mammograms and related studies. Research pertinent patient histories and act as liaison with other healthcare facilities to collect information and records from prior examinations. Perform additional duties as assigned. Conditions of Employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. The position requires completion of a pre-employment physical examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure continued, required level of physical health and fitness to perform the duties. The incumbent must obtain and maintain eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment; background investigation and credit check are required. Regular contact with children under age 18 requires a favorable suitability determination. Applicants must be able to fulfill non-privileged professional credential requirements. This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross; current Advanced Life Support does not supersede BLS completion. A Mammography Technician Certification is not required but is highly desired. Qualifications US Citizenship required Basic Requirement for Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Mammography): Radiology Certification Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. They must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. (Note: Attach a copy of radiology certification and transcripts.) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to January 13 1986 who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification from a licensed practitioner such as a Doctor of Medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others are exempt. Persons first employed after January 13 1986 who received training from institutions in a state or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training at the time of graduation, or practiced in a jurisdiction that did not license that particular field, are exempt if they show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency. Assist the radiologist(s) and other health care providers with needle localizations, ultrasound, and stereotactic guided biopsies. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience including performing radiographic procedures such as setting up X-ray equipment, reviewing images for quality, or assisting with performing breast biopsies. Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Diagnostic Radiology, Radiography, Radiologic Technology, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. Compute by dividing total months of experience by 12, then dividing total number of completed graduate semester hours beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9, and adding the two percentages.
