RN Labor and Delivery

The Labor and Delivery nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for the application of the nursing process and the delivery of patient care in the L&D Setting. The Labor and Delivery nurse demonstrates the ability to make clinical judgments in an effective and efficient manner with supervision.

The labor and delivery nurse works with Mothers during the final stages of pregnancy helping with birthing, monitoring the Mother's vital signs, and becoming astute in signs and symptoms of possible complications. The labor and delivery nurse is involved in patient education and addressing the psychosocial needs of Mothers after delivery and demonstrates critical thinking and performance ability in the coordination of patient care. Consistently performs according to nursing standards and is accountable in managing patient care and assisting others in the management of patient care.

Minimum Requirements:

• Current Registered Nurse license within the state of practice.?

• One year of Labor and Delivery clinical experience within the last three years preferred.?

• Current CPR if applicable

• TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable

• Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)

• Must meet all federal, state and local requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age

Details of Assignment: We do about 1300 deliveries a year. There are 21 rooms, a 2 bed triage room, and 2 operating rooms. To the best of our ability we follow AWHONN staffing guidelines which includes nurse:patient ratios of 1:1 for Pitocin and active labors/intermittent monitoring, a 1:2 for cervical ripening and a 1:1 with Pitocin, 1:2 for high risk medication including Magnesium Sulfate and Insulin drips, and 1:3 for Antepartum and Postpartum couplets.
