Motor vehicle records screening will be conducted prior to employment. A pre‑employment drug screening is required. Newly hired Correctional Officers are eligible for a $5,000 sign‑on bonus, payable over an 18‑month period. This position requires a criminal background check; candidates may be required to provide information about their criminal history. Education and Experience High school graduation or equivalent. Special Qualifications Be willing to and able, and authorized to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons Be at least 18 years of age on the date of application Be a citizen of the United States Have good moral character, as determined by investigation Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority Agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority Supply a fingerprint sample pursuant to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation requirement Have no felony convictions or be discharged under honorable conditions from any branch of the U.S. armed forces Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician, consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and related to essential functions Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional, consistent with the ADA and related to essential functions Submit to and pass a pre‑employment screening test for use of illegal drugs Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment in eligible positions Upon appointment, successfully complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy Career Outlook Most correctional security employees may be assigned to any of three work shifts and various post assignments. Employee work preferences are considered, but no guarantee of remaining in a specific shift or post exists. Overview The Correctional Officer 1 is responsible for correctional work of average difficulty and performs related work as required. This entry‑level class involves the custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates, and may work any shift. An incumbent is reclassified to Correctional Officer 2 after a mandatory one‑year training period; inadequate performance may result in demotion or termination. Responsibilities Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas, and attend to the medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of inmates. Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks. Check in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property. Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families about problems; evaluate inmates on hygiene, attitude toward employees and other inmates, and send this evaluation to the counseling department. Attend staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid. Prepare reports such as daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job and pay records, daily inmate counts, and requisition office supplies. Operate and use equipment including two‑way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and may operate motor vehicles. Ensure safety of residents through supervision of daily activity. Break up fights or other potentially dangerous situations by persuasion or physical force.
