Location & Travel On-site at our headquarters in College Park, MD Travel: 10% domestic and international Job ID: 1490 The Role As a Staff Scientist – Quantum Applications, you will lead the technical development of applications on IonQ’s quantum computers, acting as a bridge between academia and industry. You will be a key link to the University of Maryland ecosystem and collaborate with world‑class faculty, researchers, and global partners. Responsibilities Practical Algorithm Innovation: Lead the hands‑on development of Fault‑Tolerant Application‑Scale Quantum (FASQ) algorithms designed to scale for real‑world impact, ensuring research is rooted in the constraints of practical early fault‑tolerant systems. Full‑Stack & Hardware‑Centric Optimization: Work directly with quantum compiler, cloud, and hardware engineering teams to build highly optimized hybrid workflows tuned for IonQ’s trapped‑ion architecture. Rigorous Algorithm Analysis: Conduct deep technical evaluations comparing quantum algorithms against state‑of‑the‑art classical algorithms to identify performance and scaling characteristics. Academic Strategy & Advocacy: Act as a primary advocate for IonQ’s academic presence by engaging with UMD faculties and initiating impactful research projects. IP & External Influence: Build a robust portfolio of foundational IP and peer‑reviewed publications, representing IonQ’s technical vision at conferences and in high‑level discussions. Requirements Doctorate or equivalent experience with 3+ years in quantum computing; background in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, or another STEM domain. Demonstrated expertise in FASQ algorithms and deep familiarity with trapped‑ion quantum computers. Proficiency in error mitigation techniques and advanced quantum compilation strategies. Proven track record of developing novel algorithms with peer‑reviewed publications and production‑grade codebases. Strong communication skills across academic and business audiences. Proficient in Python, Qiskit (or similar SDKs), HPC tools, and responsible use of AI tools. Preferred Qualifications Five or more years of professional experience developing end‑to‑end solutions for realistic industry problems. Experience applying commercial tools to solve practical problems. Active contributor to the FASQ community, including foundational libraries, simulators, or compilers. Portfolio of invited talks, software repositories, licenses, or patents demonstrating a respected voice in the quantum ecosystem. Success working with internal and external partners to deliver technical solutions. Excellent collaboration and communication skills bridging academic research and commercial impact. Compensation & Benefits The approximate base salary range for this position is $167,808–$219,704. Total compensation includes base, bonus, equity, and a suite of benefit options such as comprehensive medical, dental, vision plans, matching 401(k), unlimited PTO, paid holidays, parental/adoption leave, legal insurance, and a home technology stipend.
