About the Role Our client, a trusted lender in East London , is seeking a meticulous and experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join their team. This critical role involves evaluating mortgage applications to assess risk and ensure compliance with lending guidelines and regulatory standards. You will analyze borrower creditworthiness, property values, and financial documentation to make informed lending decisions. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of mortgage products, underwriting principles, and risk management, contributing to the financial integrity of the lending process in the Eastern Cape . Key Responsibilities Review and analyze mortgage loan applications, credit reports, and property appraisals. Assess borrower's financial stability, credit history, and repayment capacity. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and investor guidelines and regulations. Make sound decisions on loan approval, denial, or counter-offer. Communicate effectively with loan originators, processors, and other stakeholders. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of mortgage lending policies and industry best practices. Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with loan applications. Requirements High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field is preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Mortgage Underwriter or in a related underwriting role. In-depth knowledge of mortgage underwriting guidelines, credit analysis, and risk assessment. Familiarity with FHA, VA, conventional, and other mortgage loan programs. Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage a high volume of applications. Proficiency with loan origination systems and underwriting software.
