Assistant Director of Nursing Services (ADNS)We’re Looking for a Nursing Leadership Superstar!

Manchester Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center is looking for a dynamic, hands-on Assistant Director of Nursing Services who wants a leadership role that is both fun and genuinely fulfilling.

This is not a sit-behind-the-desk position. You will be out in the building, connecting with residents, supporting staff, developing our CNAs, solving problems, and helping create a nursing department where people feel valued and accountable. You will oversee nursing schedules and staffing, strengthen clinical systems, celebrate successes, and help your team grow.

As a key partner to the Director of Nursing Services, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference every day. You will lead clinical operations when the DNS is unavailable and share nursing leadership on-call responsibilities.

Key ResponsibilitiesNursing Leadership and Clinical Oversight

• Support the DNS in the daily management and operation of the nursing department.

• Assume responsibility for nursing services and clinical operations in the absence of the DNS.

• Conduct regular rounds to monitor resident care, staff performance, documentation, infection-control practices, and overall unit operations.

• Ensure residents receive safe, compassionate, person-centered care in accordance with their care plans.

• Respond promptly to changes in condition, clinical concerns, incidents, grievances, and family questions.

• Participate in clinical meetings, morning huddles, care-plan meetings, risk-management reviews, and interdisciplinary conferences.

• Assist with investigations involving incidents, accidents, allegations, medication concerns, and potential regulatory reportable events.

• Support survey readiness and participate in federal, state, and other regulatory surveys.

CNA Management and Accountability

• Provide direct leadership, supervision, and accountability for the facility’s CNAs.

• Monitor CNA attendance, assignments, performance, professionalism, and compliance with facility expectations.

• Ensure CNA assignments are appropriate, clearly communicated, and completed.

• Coach, counsel, educate, and evaluate CNA staff in collaboration with the DNS and Human Resources.

• Address performance concerns promptly and consistently, including attendance, refusal of assignments, resident-care concerns, and failure to follow policies.

• Promote teamwork, professionalism, resident dignity, and accountability among CNA staff.

• Assist with CNA orientation, competency validation, ongoing education, retention, and employee engagement.

• Ensure CNA staffing meets resident acuity, care-plan requirements, and applicable staffing standards.

Staffing and Scheduling Oversight

• Oversee nursing schedules for CNAs and licensed nurses to ensure accuracy, appropriate coverage, and equitable assignments.

• Work closely with the Scheduler, nursing supervisors, and DNS to address vacancies, call-outs, shift changes, and staffing needs.

• Review schedules in advance and ensure open positions and coverage concerns are addressed promptly.

• Monitor overtime, agency utilization, attendance patterns, and scheduling practices.

• Hold the Scheduler and nursing supervisors accountable for following established scheduling and staffing procedures.

• Assist with recruitment, interviewing, hiring, orientation, and retention of nursing personnel.

• Ensure staffing decisions support safe resident care while remaining operationally and financially responsible.

Quality, Compliance, and Staff Development

• Monitor compliance with physician orders, care plans, nursing documentation, medication-management practices, and facility policies.

• Assist with audits, quality-assurance activities, performance-improvement initiatives, and corrective action plans.

• Review falls, wounds, infections, weight changes, hospital transfers, psychotropic-medication use, and other clinical risk indicators.

• Identify trends and work with the interdisciplinary team to implement appropriate interventions.

• Provide education and competency training based on identified needs, regulatory requirements, survey findings, and performance concerns.

• Ensure new nursing employees receive a thorough and effective orientation.

• Reinforce compliance with resident rights, abuse prevention, infection control, HIPAA, and state and federal regulations.

• Assist in maintaining complete, accurate, and timely clinical records.

On-Call Responsibilities

• Share nursing administrative on-call responsibilities with the DNS and other designated nursing leaders.

• Remain available during assigned on-call periods to provide direction regarding staffing, changes in condition, incidents, emergencies, and other clinical or operational concerns.

• Respond promptly and provide on-site support when the situation requires leadership presence.

Qualifications

• Current, active Connecticut Registered Nurse license required.

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.

• Previous nursing leadership or supervisory experience required.

• Skilled nursing or long-term-care experience strongly preferred.

• Strong knowledge of state and federal skilled-nursing regulations, infection control, quality assurance, and clinical documentation.

• Demonstrated ability to manage CNAs, licensed nurses, staffing, scheduling, and daily clinical operations.

• Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to provide clear expectations, maintain accountability, and address performance concerns consistently.

• Ability to remain calm, decisive, and professional in urgent or challenging situations.

• Must be available to share rotating on-call responsibilities.
