Senior Center Assistant

Job Overview The Senior Center Assistant provides essential technical and administrative assistance to ensure smooth daily operations across Frederick County senior centers. This role helps create welcoming, engaging environments by developing and sharing informational and recreational opportunities that promote the programs and services offered through the Division of Aging and Independence. The assistant collaborates closely with division staff to support community education, strengthen program awareness, and enhance the overall experience for older adults throughout Frederick County. Employment Details Full‑time (40 hrs/week, Mon‑Fri 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.) – non‑exempt; full benefits; position subject to system‑wide reassignment; funded by grant; 1 vacancy Part‑time (20 hrs/week, Mon‑Fri 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.) – non‑exempt; no benefits; position subject to system‑wide reassignment; funded by county; 3 vacancies Total Compensation Package 11 days vacation (increase after 2 years) 15 days sick leave with unlimited carryover 11 paid holidays, plus 2 additional floating holidays Comprehensive medical insurance with County HSA contribution (also dental, vision, FSA) Employee Health Center with low‑cost primary and urgent care 100 % County paid 2× annual salary Group Term Life Insurance and AD&D County and employee funded Defined Benefit Pension Plan (vesting after 5 years; additional credit for prior public service) Employee Assistance Program and Wellness Program Generous Tuition Reimbursement Program Other employee‑paid benefits: Deferred Compensation Plan, Legal Resources, Supplemental Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident, Hospital Indemnity Insurance, Lifetime Benefit with Long‑Term Care plan Essential Duties And Job Responsibilities Perform data entry and maintain client information database Assist with day‑to‑day operations of senior center(s) and related programs Respond to inquiries and requests from seniors and instructors Perform management duties in the absence of the senior center manager Develop, implement, and organize senior center activities under supervisory guidance Assist Center Supervisors with planning, promotion, and implementation of in‑person and virtual programs Plan, promote, and implement programs for new satellite locations and special events Work independently at centers, virtual or satellite locations as needed, assuming leadership roles Provide safety and security of building and participants Serve as a division ambassador, promoting division‑wide services and programs Input client data, units of service, and other information for accurate reporting to county, state, and federal agencies Provide general information and assist center participants with registration, orientation, and participation in activities Assist day‑to‑day operations of congregate meal programs as needed Register members for activities and trips; collect funds and reconcile at day’s end Perform other related duties as required To Perform This Job Successfully Employee must be able to perform all essential functions satisfactorily. Qualifications And Requirements High school diploma or equivalent 1 year of experience in human services Possession of a valid automobile license Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Obtain CPR and AED certification within first 90 days Basic knowledge of laws, regulations, and requirements regarding seniors, veterans, and disability populations Knowledge of online video conferencing platforms Basic knowledge of gerontology and related populations Team collaboration and program creation Data entry skills Creative engagement of seniors virtually or in‑person Technology troubleshooting Work with diverse populations Operate a motor vehicle Obtain required certifications Verbal and written communication skills Organizational skills Customer service skills Preference May Be Given For Secondary language skills Experience in program planning and implementation for older adults Physical Requirements / Working Conditions Constant sitting, walking; frequent lifting up to 20 pounds; occasional reaching; rarely drive Work indoors and occasionally outdoors Additional Information / Examination Process Failure to meet or maintain minimum qualifications may result in disciplinary action to termination Ability to arrange own frequent travel to meetings, work locations, and events as needed Kind of Examination (may include) Evaluation of training and qualifications One or more interviews Benefits and Compensation Frederick County Government offers an inclusive work environment and provides comprehensive benefits as described above. Employees are automatically enrolled in either the Uniformed Plan (5‑yr vesting) or the Non‑Uniformed Plan (5‑yr vesting, effective 07/01/2024). Mandatory pre‑tax contributions are required. Health Insurance County employees choose between an HMO plan or a high‑deductible plan with HSA. Coverage is effective on first day of employment. Dental Insurance One of three dental plans available. Coverage effective first day of month following 30 days of active employment. Eligibility requires employment of 75 % or greater of a 35 or 40‑hour position. Flexible Spending Accounts Maximum contribution $3,400 per year for Health Care Spending and $7,500 for Dependent Care Spending. Life Insurance Employees insured for 2 times annual salary in case of death plus 2 times for accidental death. Supplemental life insurance also offered. Savings Plan - Deferred Compensation The County offers a Section 457 Plan. Participants may defer pre‑tax or post‑tax (Roth) contributions. Educational Reimbursement Program After probationary period, employees may apply for education reimbursement. 75 % of costs reimbursed for approved courses. Employee Assistance Program Confidential assessment, referral, and counseling services available at no cost. Leave Annual and sick leave accrue as described. Other leave types include family medical, bereavement, jury, and military. Holidays County observes 10 holidays per year, 11 during general election years.
