Cytology Supervisor - Sign On Bonus

Position Summary Receives body material, fluids, exudate and scrapings, etc., and assists physicians with FNA procedures and collects specimens from patients. Examines and records classification of slides and presents slides with unusual cytomorphology to Pathologist for further examination. Maintains record of all work performed in Cytology section, e.g. NYS Department of Health requirements and annual statistics. Supervises Cytotechnologists, assigns workload, develops schedule, prepares and maintains departmental records. Performs other duties as assigned. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors Must maintain all records as per regulatory agency requirements—CAP and NYSDOH; perform monthly and annual reviews of all required standards. Write and revise and maintain SOPs for policy and procedure manual Assist in Cytology Aspiration procedures scheduled from Ambulatory Surgery, Breast Imaging, Endoscopy, Off‑Site Radiology, and Radiology Department. Screen gynecological and non‑gynecological cases daily and in a timely manner. Sign out cases with the Pathologist according to schedule Assist with preparation, staining and coverslipping of cytology specimens as needed. Label all Cytology stained slides, compare name, number of slides, clinical information, and gross description against the Cytology requisitions. Change and clean equipment and solutions in the Cytology Aspiration procedure tray; keep supplies stocked as needed. Schedule per diem coverage and supervise. Prepare and submit quality control/quality assurance reports. Meet regularly with Laboratory Director and Administrator. Maintain CME log for all members of section. Interview cytology candidates for employment. Maintain and write competency reviews for Cytotechnologists. Assist with cytotechnologists performance appraisals. Assist with disciplinary action as needed for Cytology. Order supplies and maintain inventory. Participate in any other departmental activities as directed by Laboratory Director or Pathology Supervisor. Perform all other related duties as assigned. Education & Experience Requirements N.Y.S. license and prior supervisory experience required. Bachelor of Science with ASCP Registry and/or Certified Cytology School Degree required. At least 3 years experience screening gynecological, non‑gynecological specimens and fine‑needle aspirations. Familiarity with Bethesda system for Cytology reporting. ThinPrep Certification. Physical/Mental Demands and Requirements – Work Environment May be exposed to chemicals necessary for required tasks; hazardous chemicals are listed in the hospital’s SDS database available via the Intranet or on a disc at the switchboard. Must be able to move around the department. Must be able to remain stationary for extended periods. Requires frequent use of computers and other office and laboratory equipment. Must be able to rapidly assess and respond to situational needs of the department.
