Grade 17 Location of Position Land and Materials Administration, Federal Assessment and Remediation Division, 1800 Washington Blvd., Baltimore, MD 21230 Main Purpose of Job The Geologist III/Remedial Project Manager (RPM) position within the Federal Assessment and Remediation Division provides state oversight for environmental investigations and remediation at federal facilities. This role requires the application of theoretical and practical knowledge in geology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics to evaluate site‑specific response actions. The incumbent must be proficient in using geological cross‑sections, maps, and field sampling methodologies. While reporting to a Geologist Supervisor, the individual is expected to work independently at headquarters, field sites, and off‑site meetings. Key Responsibilities Perform duties in conjunction with the Department of War, requiring security clearance. Ensure state regulations are addressed during technical investigations. Assess the nature and extent of contamination across all media with a specific focus on groundwater and the restoration of state water resources. Evaluate potential threats to human health and the environment. Inspect sites potentially contaminated with hazardous substances in accordance with all appropriate procedures and regulations. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) during on‑site inspections, including hard‑hats, steel‑toed shoes, respirators, and chemical protective gear as required. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology, or a related earth science. Experience: Three years of experience performing professional geological work. Substitution Option 1: Master’s degree in Geology, Environmental Geology, or a related earth science plus one year of the required experience. Substitution Option 2: U.S. Armed Forces military service at the rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in a physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field, on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education. Desired or Preferred Qualifications Experience working with the Department of War in an environmental aspect. Experience working with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). Degree in Geology, Sedimentology, Hydrology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, or Environmental Engineering. Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications Valid motor vehicle operator’s license in Maryland for duties requiring operation of a motor vehicle. Certification as specified in 29 CFR 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, maintained as required. Special Requirements Walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protective equipment such as respiratory protection equipment. Subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Subject to call‑in on a twenty‑four hour basis; must provide a reachable telephone number. Participation in the Maryland Department of the Environment Medical Monitoring Program (MMP) as required; successful completion and passing of the medical monitoring examination is a condition of employment.
