Job Description

The Material Handler plays a key role in supporting warehouse operations by safely handling metal materials, operating material handling equipment, and ensuring orders are accurately measured, cut, and processed. During an initial training period, you learn different types of metals, receive formal certification on sit-down forklifts, and develop strong measuring, cutting, and computer skills to support both warehouse activities and customer service at the counter.

Responsibilities

• Participate in a structured 2‑month training program to learn different metal types and receive certification on sit-down forklifts.
• Operate sit-down forklifts and pallet jacks to pull and move materials within the warehouse in a safe and efficient manner.
• Measure materials using a tape measure and other measuring tools to verify that the correct items and dimensions are pulled for each order.
• Set up and program the saw according to order specifications, ensuring proper settings and safety procedures are followed.
• Make the first cut on materials and take full measurements to confirm that dimensions match the order requirements before completing the job.
• Finish cutting the full order accurately and consistently, maintaining quality standards for all metal cuts.
• Assist customers at the counter with their orders, including answering questions and helping them select and verify materials.
• Use a computer to input and process orders, perform basic order entry, and learn how to check customers out at the counter.
• Support general warehouse activities such as unloading materials, receiving inventory, and organizing stock.
• Handle materials and inventory carefully to maintain a safe, organized, and efficient warehouse environment.
• Develop comfort and proficiency with forklift operation as a major part of the role after training.
• Prepare to grow into driving responsibilities after becoming a permanent employee, following clear driving record requirements.
• Successfully complete basic math and fraction testing as part of the hiring process, demonstrating strong numerical skills.
• Pass required cognitive and measuring assessments, including Wonderlic testing and tape measure evaluations.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of warehouse experience.
• Minimum of 6 months of measuring experience using tools such as tape measures and calipers.
• Minimum of 6 months of forklift experience is preferred, though training is available for motivated candidates.
• Ability to read and accurately use a tape measure.
• Basic math skills, including working with fractions, sufficient to pass hiring-related math testing.
• Ability to pass Wonderlic testing and tape measure assessments.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Comfort with material handling tasks, including lifting and moving metal products in a manufacturing or warehouse setting.
• Ability to use a computer for order entry and basic inventory or customer transactions.
• Willingness to operate sit-down forklifts, pallet jacks, and saws after training.
• Interest in growing within a warehouse environment and taking on additional responsibilities over time.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience within the metals or steel industry is highly preferred but not required.
• Prior experience cutting metals is helpful but not required; training is provided.
• Prior warehouse experience is preferred.
• Experience using calipers or other precision measuring tools is beneficial.
• Exp in manufacturing, inventory handling, unloading, receiving, or machine operation is an advantage.
• Experience as a saw operator or machine operator is a plus.
• Clear motor vehicle record is required to assume future driving responsibilities after becoming permanent.
• Strong computer skills for order entry and customer checkout are beneficial.
• Ability to work comfortably in a hot, physically active environment.
• Customer service experience at a counter or retail-style environment is helpful.

Work Environment

This role is based in a non–air-conditioned warehouse outlet location that handles pre-cut and one-off size materials from nearby stores. The facility is smaller and more focused than a large distribution site, creating a hands-on environment where you work closely with materials and customers. The shift runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a 1‑hour lunch break. The work setting is hot and physically active, requiring appropriate safety attire, including long pants, a T-shirt, and steel-toe footwear. You regularly use sit-down forklifts, pallet jacks, saws, and measuring tools, along with computers for order entry and customer transactions.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of POMPANO BEACH, FL.

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $17.00/hr.
