Human Resources Director

The Human Resources Director provides leadership for the YMCA’s people strategy, organizational culture, and human resources operations.

POSITION SUMMARY: This role offers the opportunity to build and strengthen the YMCA’s human resources function for the future. The Director will assess current HR practices and workforce needs, identify priorities, and develop a thoughtful, phased approach to advancing the organization’s people strategy. Key opportunities include modernizing HR systems and practices, strengthening manager and leadership capability, developing sustainable compensation and career structures, improving performance management, enhancing the employee experience, and building workforce and succession strategies that support the organization’s long-term direction.


The Director will balance strategic leadership with hands-on execution. While ensuring that day-to-day HR responsibilities are performed effectively, consistently, and in compliance with applicable requirements, the Director will also look beyond immediate needs to identify opportunities for organizational improvement and build scalable, sustainable people practices.


Success in this role requires a leader who is comfortable building while operating-someone who can address today’s employee and organizational needs while creating the systems, leadership practices, and people strategy the YMCA will need tomorrow. Through partnership, coaching, data, and thoughtful leadership change, the Director will help create an environment where employees can achieve, contribute, develop, and feel a strong sense of belonging.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, organizational development, or a related field; master’s degree and/or SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR, or other relevant professional certification preferred.


• Minimum of three (3) plus years of progressive human resources and management experience, preferably within the YMCA and/or nonprofit sector, with demonstrated experience in employee relations, talent acquisition, performance management, employee development, and organizational culture.


• Strong knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and HR best practices, including wage and hour, employment practices, workplace safety, leave administration, benefits, employee relations, and other applicable federal, state, and local requirements.


• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective HR strategies, policies, and programs that support the organization’s mission, strategic priorities, employee engagement, retention, and overall organizational effectiveness.


• Proven ability to partner with the CEO, executive leadership, managers, and Board/volunteer leadership by providing sound guidance on complex employee relations, organizational development, workforce planning, compensation, performance, and other people-related matters.


• Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to attract, develop, retain, and motivate high-performing employees while fostering a culture of accountability, inclusion, collaboration, respect, and continuous improvement.


• Strong interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with sound judgment, professionalism, discretion, and integrity; must demonstrate a strong commitment to the YMCA’s mission, values, and commitment to serving diverse communities.
