SUMMARY:
Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned. Provide program support and service delivery; communicate effectively within and across teams and participate in cross‑functional work groups. Maintain a commitment to the District mission; model District expectations through personal leadership and actively support the efforts of others to achieve District goals.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Instructional Strategies Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process for each student assigned. Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required. Implement instruction in academic and adaptive skills, using strategies that accommodate various learning styles and disabilities. Conduct assessment of student learning styles. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist Special Education students in regular classes with assignments. Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis. Participate in selection of materials, equipment, and other instructional media. Student Growth and Development Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal. Provide or supervise personal care to include diapering, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP. Be a positive role model for students. Classroom Management and Organization Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students. Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required. Communication Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members. Professional Growth and Development Participate in staff development activities to improve job‑related skills. Comply with State, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Other Maintain confidentiality. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers. Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information in support of all programs; compile, maintain, file, and secure all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents. Pursue Professional Development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure that Professional Development activities are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research. Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives. Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators. Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures. Perform other related duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university. Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with required Special Education endorsements for subject and level assigned. Experience Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience. Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Knowledge of core academic subject assigned. Knowledge of curriculum and instruction. Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior. Knowledge of Special Education Laws and Regulations: Understanding IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), IEP (Individualized Educational Program) process, and other relevant laws. Knowledge of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and positive behavior support strategies. Knowledge of techniques for differentiated instruction, multisensory teaching, and individualized learning plans. Familiarity with various physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbances. Skills in conducting formal and informal assessments to track student progress and adjust instruction accordingly. Ability to modify teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse needs of students. Ability to work effectively with general education teachers, parents and other stakeholders. Ability to manage multiple IEPs, lesson plans, and classroom activities efficiently. Ability to evaluate student progress and adapt teaching strategies accordingly. Possesses patience and compassion essential for creating a supportive and understanding classroom environment. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Supervisory Responsibilities Direct the work of Instructional Aides. Mental/Physical Demands and Environmental Factors Tools/Equipment Used Personal computer, phone systems, video/instructional equipment, and peripherals. Adaptive classroom equipment/assistive technology including sensory equipment and mobility aides. Posture Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting. Motion Frequent walking; repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists. Frequent transition between sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, pushing and pulling. Lifting Control and assist behavior through physical restraint. Assist non-ambulatory students. Requires regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities. Lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment. May lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment. Environment Exposure to biological hazards. Work to be completed on‑site from assigned school or building; regular exposure to loud noise and computer monitors. No remote work. Mental Demands Work in a stressful, chaotic, and/or loud environment. Supervising students and responding calmly and promptly to emergency situations.
