ATTORNEY GENERAL (DEPT OF LAW) UNIT CHIEF COUNSEL Job Location: Child and Family Protection Division/Child Support Services Unit 125 E Elliot Rd, Chandler, AZ 85225 Salary: $80,000 – $126,000 Grade: 1 Closing Date: 06/19/2026 Job Summary The Arizona Attorney General’s Office Child and Family Protection Division/Child Support Services Section is seeking a Unit Chief Counsel. This position is responsible for litigation on behalf of and representation of the Arizona Department of Economic Security ("DES"). Child Support Services attorneys work specifically with DES's Division of Child Support Services ("DCSS"), and the responsibilities include advising DCSS on child support law. This position reports directly to the Child Support Services Section Chief Counsel. Under direction, the Unit Chief Counsel plans, organizes, directs, and supervises attorneys' work, pursuant to the policies, procedures, and practices of the Child Support Services Section. The Unit Chief Counsel is responsible for interviewing, hiring recommendations, training, coaching, and discipline. Remote Options: This position may be eligible for Remote Work two days a week. Job Duties Supervises, directs, plans, and organizes work of the attorneys handling child support litigation and personnel matters for attorneys. Assists in line lawyers' cases and attorneys' assigned client requests for legal advice as necessary. Consults with and advises officials and employees of the client agency. Consults with members of local tribunals regarding procedural matters in IV-D cases. Occasional hearing coverage. Coordinates, plans, and leads training for new and established CSS attorneys. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge Knowledge and understanding of case law, statutes, rules, and regulations regarding child support. Knowledge of legal techniques and the basic concepts of American Jurisprudence and of the formats utilized in the preparation of legal documents. Skill Oral advocacy Effective legal writing Skilled in communication Legal analysis and reasoning Good judgment regarding legal advice/recommendation Effective case presentation trial work Ability Display appropriate courtroom demeanor. Must be able to handle a high volume of work and stressful situations. Selective Preference(s) Juris Doctorate Degree and admission to the State Bar of Arizona. This position is required to travel/drive on state business; a current AZ driver's license is required. Pre-Employment Requirements Travel is required for this position. A valid Arizona Driver’s License is required, along with consent to have your driving record run periodically. Admission to, and good standing with, the Arizona State Bar is required (include on resume the date(s) of admission in Arizona and any other states). Candidate must have an active Arizona State Bar license. Attorney applicants are required to submit a writing sample with their resume/application profile. The writing sample should contain an analysis of some substantive legal issue and provide insight concerning your ability to think and to explain and advocate for a particular position.
